bring back the ronin!

i have numbered ronin, i love the knife, but i dont care for the sheath, i apprecite the thought process put into the sheath design, but find it a little to large for my taste!!!!

I like the idea of a Ronin revamp to a mule like model.
No scales, no sheath, that will keep the price down, and everybody can finish it in ones own taste. Dressed it up or just wrap it up and go with simple kydex.
I think we should keep on going this direction! :D

Well I doubt if we will ever see a Ronin sprint run as MJ now works for a different knife company...but I have a Spyderco fixed blade wharnie wannabee design in mind that would certainly fill the bill....be happy to share it with the people at Spyderco if there was any interest on their part....Doc :D

My Yojimbo is the only wharncliffe Spyderco I own. It's a very comfortable blade IMO, and since I got it a year ago it has become one of my favorite Spydies. Just something about the blade shape and overall package of the knife. I think I'll hold onto it for quite some time. We still need some pics in this thread. I'm all for bringing the Ronins back, I'd love to try one for size. :)

even though micheal janich works for blackhawk, he still sold his design to spyderco. im sure being the savy business men that the owners of spyderco are, they probably own the rights to produce the ronin whenever they wish to do so. im sure janich and snody get some kind of royalties for knives bearing there names,but i wouldnt see how this would hinder spyderco from producing the ronin

I think it's less about rights and more about ethics....but I could be wrong...I have been in the past....Doc :D

ethics? we still have those in the u.s.? i think if more companies had ethics a certain brand name knife company wouldnt be making knifes that look almost identical to spydercos. that being said, i think spyderco is definatley one of the more ethical companys out there. just read the sticky on shiny footprints. i wouldnt even have known about this forum if it wasnt for the friendly people at the SFO. after calling them several times inquiring about the ronin, they informed me to request a sprint run on the forum. other knives have been produced in sprint runs. so as far as i can see, asking doesnt hurt. and the more people that ask, the more spyderco will listen.

I don't know any kind of details regarding outside designer rights on Spyderco models and how that would potentially affect a re-issue, but my feeling is that Spyderco would endeavor to inquire with the designer(s) about it regardless of whether they're contractually obligated to do so. The outcome of such a situation may or may not then have a bearing on whether a sprint run gets done. I think that's what Doc is getting at. It's hard to speculate about it because the specifics of such things aren't really public (nor would I expect them to be) and what may go for one person might not apply in the case of another.
