I know this has been done before but it's always interesting to get others thoughts. What are your favorite discontinued Spyderco models that you would like to see make a comeback?

Also out of these models what would you change if anything?

I would love to see the Salsa and full size Persian make a comeback. I never got a chance to get either one when they were still in production.

The Persian I wouldn't change anything. To me the knife is perfect and a thing of beauty although it might look pretty good in burgundy micarta.

The Salsa (IMHO) would look really nice in another handle material, whether it be G10 or micarta.

I have others but I'll get the ball rolling with these two.
Sometimes you gotta kick at the darkness until it bleeds daylight.

liveit_loud on Ebay.

I'll 2nd the Salsa. Finally got a Cranberry Salsa and it's sweet (only Salsa I have).

Add the MerrKat to the list (with upgraded blade steel).
I think it's a great little knife and I'm totally into the trick handles.

I'd like to see a Burgundy Micarta Karambit with fully serrated edge......... ;)

VERY unlikely to happen for cost reasons as much as anything else but then again dreams are what keep me going! :D

I'd even accept FRN handles as long as they are Burgundy and it would keep the cost lower..............

Two for me, the C75P2 all stainless Kiwi and the C83 Schempp Persian. I'd be happy with a straight re-issue of the Kiwi, but since Spyderco traditionally doesn't do that, a different steel and/or a full flat grind would be fine. For the Persian, there are some changes I'd personally like that Ed has already said are off the table, and others which would push the cost into the stratosphere, but a different scale material/color within those acceptable to Ed would be fine.

The D'Allara drop points but change the FRN handles to flat-sided G10 to reduce its "bulkiness."

I'm an admirer of Spyderco's designs. Using them is like immersing yourself in music or studying a painting in a museum. I buy some "fine" art but my preference is for usable art.

I thought I had a line on a Stainless Kiwi, but then it fizzled out. Unfortunate. Very nice knife so I'll keep dreaming. I agree with the Deacon and many others who are hoping for a return of the C83 Persian in some form, really any form. That'd really be excellent.

C83 Persian are always welcome to my home with any steel, Spyderco decide to use, micarta, wood or bone.
Shabaria with antique ivory micarta handle,
Clipless Kopa, crimson jigged bone.
Caly3 (or UKPK), Vg10 (S30V, 154CM, D2, Sandvik) blade with micarta, bone or wood handle, bolsters are great. 3.5" blade with the same width is wonderful.
Lum Fixed tanto with Green micarta handle
Orange G10 Dodo

My top choices Natives5, Calys, C83 Persian

Fabulous 5 Spyders of all time

#11

Post by JD Spydo »

I have what I call my "Fabulous 5 Spyders of All Time" that I feel have all more than earned a comeback. They are as follows:

C-60 Massad Ayoob SE & PE in G-10 or Micarta handle w/ZDP-189
C-44 Big Dyad, w/VG-10, D-2 or S90V blades and the same Micarta handle
C-54 big Calypso model with any premium steel & Micarta or G-10 handle
C-46 Bob Lum Tanto Folder with either D-2 or S90V blade steel or ZDP-189
C-70 TITANIUM ATR model with any of the new Super Blade Steels

And with an extraordinary honorable mention I would say for specialty Spyders I do believe that the Dodo has earned it's rights for a comeback or sprint run. And I like Thombrogan's idea of Sandvik blade steel or ZDP-189

Great Thread Brother :)

Well one of them is coming back and in a form that I know I will love. The Stretch in FRN. That will be an awesome daily carry knife for lots of things. I can't remember if it is coming in dark navy FRN or what though.

I would also love to have a Calypso Jr. brought back to life. I don't care if the handle is black, grey, burgundy, dark blue, green, or whatever. I just want it to be FRN, and I want the blade to be VG-10. I also want the clip to be the blasted looking grey with the black bug on it. Come to think of it this knife would look awesome in dark navy blue FRN like the Stretch. Yummy.

I vote for the big Persian too.. :D

Say Deacon, and others, what is special about the stainless Kiwi? Is it because it's the economy model of the Kiwis or what? Just curious... and I just might know where to get one.. or some..

I know I'm gonna get laughed at for this. I always liked the Toad.

I'd also like to see the full-sized Calypso make a comeback. The Police3 is just a bit too big for me.

I'd like the Navigator to be brought back in a third incarnation with G10 scales (maybe translucent like the upcoming Leaf Strom but in a different color), light weight bolsters (ti?), PE in VG10, with fine jimping on a more rounded thumb ramp. IMO that would be a dynamite little EDC. The new Dragonfly, though, may be a great sub for my fantasy Nav.

I'd like to see the Shabaria come back; closer to the original concept. Searching through some very old threads I found that originally it was supposed to be similar in size to the Military. I think a size increase would have worked better for the knife, as it was released the handle was too small and the lock was less than ideal.

Bit thinner than the bolstered version. That by itself can be a plus at times. But, to be honest, I'm being selfish here. For me the big draw is that they take engraving very nicely, and I would like to give these two some company...
