G10 salt -- will it ever happen?
G10 salt -- will it ever happen?
i'm glad to see that more and more people are begin to take note and talk about the fact that H1 is one of the very best things spyderco has going for it. its up there with serrations, and pocket clips -- a real, groundbreaking innovation that changes EVERYTHING about how one thinks about EDC.
it's awesome to see H1 finding its way into fixed blades, ladybugs, gigantic serrated sheepsfoot paratrooper knives...
but there are two bases that still remain to be covered by the magical goodness of H1.
1. DRESS KNIFE (as discussed on other threads)
2. overbuilt G10 Hard-Use folder (like the mili, manix, para)
i feel like 2. would be universally appreciated. what say the rest of the spyderco enthusiasts here?

The big question on a G-10 Salt is: "How many people are going to pay the price it will have to sell for?" Sal said elsewhere that G-10 is seven times the expense of FRN. Add in rustproof liners (H-1 or titanium) and the attendent cost in material and machining, and then add in rustproof threaded fasteners (because people will pitch a fit if they can't take it apart) and you are probably looking at a Delica sized knife with a MSRP around $300, maybe more.
Even if everyone who has said they want that bought three, it wouldn't offset the cost of developement. And I suspect its mass-market appeal would be pretty close to zilch.

I don't believe in safe queens, only in pre-need replacements.
I'll definetly throw a vote in for "YES", although I certainly understand what Yablanowitz is sayin. I think an H1 Paramilitary would be perfect, and would have minimal parts/liner that would need to be H1 or Ti. We can always daydream, right?? :D :D :D

Re: G10 salt -- will it ever happen?
I was trying to chase down some info on the upcoming G10 + LC200N knives Sal mentioned are in the works, and came across this zombie thread I initiated seven years ago.
The prospect of a nitrogen steel + g10 salt is definitely fantastic news to me! Some of my favorite Spyderco folder designs are the big, hard-use, hand-filling G10 folders -- Manix XL, Military, and original Lil Temperance. However, I can’t really put these knives to work in some of my favorite and most typical outdoor situations in southeast Alaska, where annual rainfall is measured in feet; I ultimately have to defer to H1 due to the corrosion resistance and ease of maintenance. I also like the ease of sharpening in the field -- it's pretty common for me to touch-up knives using the ceramic edge on the bottom of a coffee mug. The SE Pacific Salts and Spyderhawk are real beasts and excellent workhorses, but I miss the feel, performance, and style of the big G10 knives.
Not long after the Tenacious came out, I took my brand new SE model out for a half day of marine work, to see how it would do. After one outing, it was toast.
It sounds like Spyderco has something in the works that is going to raise the bar significantly, and further diversify the Salt line -- I’m psyched!
What do you guys think? Is a G10 Salt Folder on your "must have" list??

Caribbean will be offered in G10 or FRN and LC200N? Correct me if I'm wrong.

Agree on all points, clovisc

I rely a lot on H1 and use Salts on a daily basis for almost all my cutting chores. Work and free time.

Other knives just can't tick all boxes (bendy, non chippy steel/rustproof/stout tip/serrations for fibrous materials/lightweight and slim/etc.), but I love my G10 knives and always wanted to be able to get a Salt with that handle material

I'd gladly get one (or many) of those as my new EDCs, after witnessing what the Salt line is capable of

I'm curious about LC200N, too!

Deacon is right -- the Autonomy is proof of concept that G10 and nitrogen steel can and should go together in a folder! Guess I overlooked that one since I tend to focus my attention on what I am able to buy and carry while staying out of trouble. It would be pretty sweet if a non-auto version were available.
Are there any photos of the Caribbean out there?

This is about the best picture we have of the Caribbean, compliments of Liquid Cobra from the 2016 Shot Show thread:clovisc wrote:Deacon is right -- the Autonomy is proof of concept that G10 and nitrogen steel can and should go together in a folder! I believe so. Kind of a leaf-style blade similar to the Manix series. I'm looking forward to this one too. :)
