Anyone use their Micro Dyad?

#1

Post by davec »

I am a huge fan of anything Spyderco but have to admit that the only Spyderco that I've found disappointing in recent memory is the Micro Dyad. Paid around $90 or so for mine on the bay, the red bone version. Was a bit surprised at how small it really is. Quality is still there but at that size, imho its impractical as a using knife. Would love to see reissue of the mini Micarta Dyad.

In the meantime I think the Byrd Wings is a honking steal. Can be had for under $35.00, excellent quality and two sharp blades. I use mine as a utility knife around the house.

I also have the bone handled MicroDyad, and I use mine everyday.

Granted, it's almost never the only knife I carry, but I think it's the absolute best NKP friendly knife. The small size combined with the blade layout and jigged bone handles, it reminds people of the old case style knives like their grandpas carried.

That small SE blade is second only to the cricket (and dodo) when it comes to ability to open clam packs and packages. The PE blade is amazingly pointy and thin, and can slice as thin as paper on some materials.

The handle is chubby enough to allow a good grip even though I can only get 2.5 fingers around it. I do wish that the SE blade wasn't so tall, so that it would feel more comfortable when I'm only using the PE blade, but I never need to do any extremely tough work with that little blade.

It's not a do-all knife, but if it were the only thing I had in my pocket in the office, I wouldn't feel under-knifed.

I use my micro-Dyad, actually I have two of them, and planning to buy more
I think Micro-Dyad is a nice gents knife and I use it on dress-up occasions, rest of the time it is sitting on my desk and get used to open letter and other stuff like this. Comparing micro-dyad with wings would be the same as compare Byrd Raven for $20 with Kopa for $150. All depends on your needs and preferences.

Use mine and like it. Pencils sharpened, laces cut, boxes/packs opened.

Does it all.

I carried mine for a year, used it very little. It was better by far than no knife at all, but well below the minimum length that I am comfortable using for anything beyond cleaning my fingernails.

I love the micarta C39. :D

I carry my MicroDyad when I dont want a clipped knife - which is rare, so I carry it anyway most of the time. I know this little guy is not overly useful, but it is almost like the epitome of Spyderco in a little package. You have phenomenal fit and finish, great scale material/look, super shart VG10 steel, PE and SE all in one. This is what I would put into a time capsule to describe Spyderco if I only had 2.5" of space :p .

I have one and carry it sometimes, but the blades stick out way too far from the handle when closed to make it comfortable. The finish is lacking too, especially for what it cost -- some of the pins that hold the bone in place weren't flattened, and stick out far enough to be annoying. In general, to get multiple blades in a package that small, I'd rather carry a Case Peanut or the like (Except Peanuts don't have a serrated blade). That said...

The PE blade is a lovely, lovely little pointy pocket scalpel. I'd love to see, oh, a Ladybug sprint using it.

And the Wings Slipit (I don't have the big locking one... yet) is a great knife.

I carry a jigged bone one on occasions. If they made a left hand version it would give my Kiwis serious competition.

Still use mine the same way. Nice gents knife. Have three of them: two jigged bone and one black purl.

How can a clipless backlock knife have a handedness?

I bought one thinking that I might keep it for my "wearing a suit and don't want to scare anyone" knife--but I think I might pass it on to my father to replace the little Buck stockman I stole from him was I was a kid! :D
I don't think he'd ever carry a larger knife. My exceedingly strong preference is to find the right knife for a person and give as a gift (advantage=I get to research and buy more knives!). So, I think my micro dyad in black pearl may become Dad's the next time I see him.

Have you every tried holding a Micro Dyad, or any of the other Dyads for that matter, in you left hand and opening it? I'm betting you never have, otherwise you would not have asked that question.

Hah Good one. I had the same question as the OP, but now that I pull it out of my pocket and try it - it is so obvious. The Spydie hole is on the wrong side for lefties!!

I've always just opened my MD with both hands because it's so small.

*tries*

Okay, I see what you're talking about now.

Believe it or not...the Micro Dyad and the Wings are my favorite all around knives.

I'm definitely not a knife connoisseur by any means (I have an old Marbles Ideal, the new Bushcraft UK and a Buck Strider Police) yet those five seem to cover whatever I can think of needing both at home and out in the wild.

The Dyad is a perfect size for casual/formal edc; the black pearl/blade finish is beautiful; there's not much that the serrated won't cut through when taking your time; the point on the PE is perfect for minor 'surgery' if needed; the two blade concept is just plain smart...and the best part...it is actually a knife that my wife will carry to accomplish the above herself (which is why I need another). :)

There is only one knife that I desire to carry every day of the year (along with an AAA light and a mini Bic) and that's the Micro Dyad. I may feel more secure or better prepared with the use it/abuse it Wings or extra thick bladed prybar-type Buck...yet the MD is still under $100 and like the (2nd) Bushcraft; a knife that you can actually (ab)use without thinking twice about it (while still having another blade in reserve). ;)
