Anyone have any info on supposed modifications for the '09 Dragonfly?
I read a comment recently about some new changes Spyderco plans on implementing with the D-fly this year: G-10 handles, jimping, low riding removable wire clip.
Anyone heard anything about this? (Didn't see these changes in the 2009 catalog.)
I'd love it if they put in the jimping on the thumb ramp.

Excellent. Thanks for the link. I heard some random commenter on YouTube talk about the new mods and I got excited. Thanks again!! :)tomoto wrote:hey there.

Sure. It was a review by nutnfancy but it was actually an updated video where he modified the Dragonfly:tomoto wrote:hey no problem! :D were all here to share as much as we can.
could i get a link to this youtube video? would love to tune in to the guy's comments.

Nutnfancy ended up putting a thin strip of self-adhesive skateboarding material on the narrow strip of the thumb ramp.
Rather than buying the current D-Fly and doing a similar mod or whipping out the Dremel, I figured I would just wait until the new modified version comes out.
Thanks again.
haha o ididnt see it in the comments. hopefully the guy replies... :Delpidi0526 wrote:Sure. It was a review by nutnfancy but it was actually an updated video where made a mod to it:

another thing. i wonder of the D-fly will come with a swappable clip? being a lefty thats quite important to me. removable is one thing, but swappable from right to left? man. it'd seriously be the perfect LBK! :D

All other models using the current style of wire clip allow LH and RH mounting and I'm fairly sure I read the same comment as elpidi0526. Even if it uses a flat steel clip, aside from the bolstered models, every new or updated front lock for the past few years that uses one of them has allowed at least ambi and in most cases 4 way mounting. So I'd say there's a very high probability the next generation Dragonfly will follow suit.tomoto wrote:haha o ididnt see it in the comments. hopefully the guy replies... :D

Jimping, where is the matter? It takes ten minutes, 5 on the dremel and 5 on a diamond file just to smothe everything up. Some time I found in my kitchen bread that seems much harder than this steel. :)
Ps: I wish I was on cellphone camera as enaght as on the file

I've gone the same route on many a knife myself. It's just nice to get them that way from the factory. They make 'em so purty. The g-10 D'fly, the Urban and the FRN stretch 2 are my must haves for 2009.robin wrote:Jimping, where is the matter? looks great robin! :D but ya, like araneae said, i love jimping from the factory :p , for me the jimping aint as big an issue as the rightsided frn integral clip.araneae wrote:I've gone the same route on many a knife myself. Very nice work Robin. But, in fairness, not everyone possesses all three of the things needed to do that. Even among us knife knuts there are those who don't own a Dremel, or even a needle file. Then there's skill/talent, we all have our areas of skill, but not everyone can do all things well. And finally there's mindset, some who could, would be afraid to try.robin wrote:Jimping, where is the matter? That said, even though I'd put myself in the "lacks the talent" group for this, I'd never let lack of jimping stop me from buying a knife I felt to be an excellent EDC in all other regards. There are enough talented people who could correct the factory's minor oversight for me. However, for me anyway, jimping is less important, in fact unimportant, on models like the Dragonfly, Calypso Jr, and Kopa where there is a sharp, almost 90º, junction between the ramp and the spine than on models like the Stretch and Delica which have a rounded "hump".
But again, based on current trends, I'd be more surprised if the "next gen" Dragonfly lacks jimping that if it has it.

Elpidi, unfortunately I live too far from states to be of any practical help. But as You stated probably every forumer who has jet dane it before would be glad to do it for you. That said this was my first, and since now, unique jimping. I did it with the dremel because it was by hand, but I am shure I could do the same with two metal saw blades jointed toghether with a piece of tape (american tape would be perfect) and spaced with any kind of inertial material like a sheet of plastic or cardboard: at the end it's a one dollar tool :) .
Believe me it's only a mater of accepting the challenge and try: the harder thing is to avoid the metal powder filtering between handle and blade starting whorking as a sandblaster: some thik grease could do. Consider also I am not a craftmen, I work with the pen (not in english as You can see from the crowd of errors and mispelling) and all my manual skills are from auto-learning. But I have e great moral debt with USA because I discovered I could do myself, with pleasure, thinks like maintenance of my bikes (BMW or Harley) after having read about 30 years ago or so "The Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance".
