going price of the matriarch

#1

Post by duff72 »

hello all I've been lurking for a while and have gained quite a bit from the knowledge here. I have been wondering if anyone here knows what a fair price for a matriarch would be. I know they are hard to find. just curious. thanks in advance. :spyder:

Ay Duff and welcome to the forum....The Matriarch is a hard find and very sought after by collectors, they were discontinued many a year ago....I have seen the price on ones available skyrocket in recent times...The Cheapest I have seen it for recently was $160 and I have seen them go for as high as 200+, as far as a fair price goes, well what is fair to one might not be considered fair to another but I'm thinking $175 is a decent price for such a knife. The thing is....now go try and find one....Good Luck......Doc :D

I could swear that a year or so back somebody found a stash of about a dozen Matriarchs somewhere, bragged about buying them for cheap, then proceeded to attempt to sell them. IIRC, everyone felt his original asking price was a bit excessive and, again if my hazy memory on this is anywhere near correct, he wound up selling most of them for around $125 each. To me even that's top dollar for one, unless it's a model you need to complete a "group" in your collection.

Factors for rising value

If that was brand new and in the box you got a super lucky deal :)

The Matriarch is another grand example of the collector value that soars on discontinued Spyderco Hawkbills. Especially on a model that wasn't all that popular to begin with.

Sure would be a great Sprint Run candidate. I'm wondering if this is a model that was truly destined to have an FRN handle? Because the more I play with mine the more I agree with Mike Sastre that the size, proportion and scope of this model made it perfect for such a strong lightweight handle. I will admit that I am truly taking a harder look at FRN handled Spyders.

Also the Matriarch is a perfect size for a lady's SD blade. Which is another reason for it's catapulting value.

Not too long after they were discontinued, they could be purchased for $55 NIB.

Surging latent popularity

It's a beautiful "Reverse S", Hawkbill blade.

I also find it interesting that there seems to be much more fanfare for the Matriarch than there is for the Civilian here lately.

For some reason I don't think we've seen the last of the Matriarch. It's popularity just keeps growing.

I like them because they have(had) the simplicity of FRN, with a classy blade design and reasonable cost. To me, sort of like a FRN Calypso, if that makes sense.

I guess I was in the minority and they went away.

I remember the gentleman with all the Matriarchs that Deacon referred to. He was on a Matriarch Hunt, bought some of the last ones I had at the Indy 1500, then fell into a bunch that someone had and didn't realize the relative value, so he wound up with a glut of knives that he was selling at more than reasonable prices. Probably long gone by now. Matriarch's original intent was as a SD piece for women in South Africa because of the rising crime rate and number of rapes. Perfect SD piece in my opinion - other than a Bagwell Bowie or 1911.

Duff72,

Talk to me next Indy.

Grey Matriarchs are the U.S. made for BladeForums knives. South Africans were always black. Issue for BF greys was 500.

The hunt for finding rare and interesting Spydies is never easy. It's all part of the fun of collecting them. I found my black handled Matriarch with ATS-55 a few months back. Looked to have never been used. Only handling marks are on the clip and a few on the spine. For $45, of course I bought it! ;)

Mike ... It's been commonly discussed for years on the Forum that the grey's were done for a South African distributor. Here's a link to SpyderWa's rare & collectible list that has been around for five or six years that echos that same thought process. I just haven't heard of a 500 piece sprint run of grey Matriarchs being done for Blade Forums.
