Deal Breaker

#1

Post by Bluntrauma »

Do you have one when it concerns purchasing knives? At one time I would never buy a Spyderco that didn't have an ambi clip. Then I got the Paramilitary. It opens with such ease that I don't miss the left side mounted clip.

On the other hand, I have a brand new D'Fly that I can't stand. The knife is great, don't get me wrong, but it is so clumsy to try to open one handed for this southpaw. Shame really, what a great little knife.

Anyway, deal breakers for me are "most" knives that don't have left position clips.

My other deal breaker is a knife w/full serrations. I just cannot find a use for them in my every day carry that a plain edge doesn't handle for me.

Do you have any deal breakers concerning knife purchase?

If it does not have a Mar/McBurnette type lock and a plain edged blade, the chances of it ever entering my pocket are very close to zero. The single glaring exception to that is the WTC knife which I carry once a year. However, as a collector, I do sometimes purchase knives I'd never consider carrying.

I hear you on that one. Recently I have bought the T-Mag and a combo edged SS Native. I will probably never carry them but wanted to have them in my collection

Not strictly "deal breakers" but like many here I have preferences and STRONG preferences. Any knife that strays too far from these won't get used and I'm FINALLY beginning to say NO to some of these (and yes, I know, some things I could mod or have modded, but still...)

So, things like...
I LOVE BBLs. I'll try anything with a BBL.
I STRONGLY prefer FFG
I STRONGLY prefer a Caly style wire clip
I prefer G10
I like to try new (to Spyderco) steels
I prefer somewhere around 3" blade

tend to drive my purchases.

My current favorites:
Phoenix
P'kal
Modded D2 Para
Lil'Temp

And I've not purchased a couple I really like because they didn't make enough of those:

CF Native IV
Stretch II

Full SE although I do have one, just because i feel I should, I'm not particularly fond of full SE.
FRN as a rule, although I do have the odd one, the D'Allara springs to mind. I don't particularly mind FRN when it mimics the texture of G-10 though. Just not overly keen on the bi-directional textured FRN. ;) :o

Kraton rubber. I've had bad experiences with it in the past, and I won't buy a knife that features it anymore.

All metal handles. I still buy one now and then just because I think "I should have one of those" but I know I won't carry it enough to make it worth buying.

Combo edge. I have little enough need for serrations, but when I do need them, I want a whole blade worth. Having some on my plain edge blade is just annoying.
I don't believe in safe queens, only in pre-need replacements.

This is totally off subject but didn't want to start a thread for it. Does or has anyone ever made a left handed liner lock?

From what I've read, I believe there were a few left handed ones made of at least one of the two early Terzuola collaborations (C15 and/or C19).

Other than that, nada from Spyderco. Not sure of other manufacturers, have no real interest in knives without a round hole opener, and even less in brands other than Spyderco that use it. Know some custom makers will be happy to make you one, I have a left handed A. T. Barr One-Eyed-Jack. On the other hand, know at least a couple others who'll turn you down cold.

Hey Deacon thanks for the response. I was just curious as I was sitting here playing with my tenacious and cut my knuckle again. Somehow liner locks just aren't conducive to lefty safety, for me anyway.

No Deal Breaker just me

#14

Post by Manix Guy 2 »

I try to just be practical and works for me as a lefty . So I rarely buy unless true ambi or dedicated left hand . I would be broke buying knives that fit awkward for me , so I reserve my investmestments to the left side . Righties rule in the knife world , a very lucky bunch , many times I have wanted a knife only to pass . Regards to all MG2

Well......

If the knife doesn't have AT LEAST 60% serrations.

And I'm not too fond on the wave either.

That are about the only deal breakers for me I guess :D

A few years ago I stopped buying knives that weren't lefty friendly in at least two out of the three main areas (opening, lock accessibility and pocket clip locations). That is the only deal breaker for me, I have a lot of preferences but they're usually pretty fluid so it's a case-by-case basis on what I really prefer.

For collecting purposes there aren't any deal breakers for me, especially since most of the older models I like don't have lefty pocket clips.

All the one-hand opening knives made by Victorinox have a left-handed liner-lock. As a lefty myself, used to manipulating right-handed locks my entire life...it's a little weird.

Thumbstuds, which is why I only buy Spyderco folders. Liner locks are not my favorite but is the design of the lock and knife is good I will buy it, cricket being a great example.

Carbon Fiber is not one of my favorite handle materials & it drives the price up on the knife. Granted the new Native 4 is tempting me, but in the back of my head I hear "Imagine that in G10."

Also looks play a big factor. I was set on getting one of the new JD Smith, but after seeing it with the full flat grind I am not sure. I just like how it looked in the pre-production with a sabre-grind.

Last is price, at least for me. Money is tight right now, so I am being very selective about my purchases. If I had the cash, I'd get a Phoenix, Native 4, and a Orange G10 Urban. The Phoenix I really like, but it would most likely be a safe-queen, so it's out. This puts it between the Orange G10 Urban and the Native 4. I've handled the Orange G10 Urban & the price is lower, so it's in the lead right now. If Ihad the cash to spare, someone would be getting a big order, but other priorities come first right now.

Thumbstuds are also a deal breaker for me. I don't do FRN, organic origin handles (like wood or bone, not my style), half serrations, wave openers, slip joints, or camo G-10.

I also don't like over engineered stuff or stuff that looks like it was made more for looks then function. Don't get me wrong. I like a nice looking knife, but to me the functionality is what it makes it attractive. Spyderco understands the "in the dark engineering" most of the time, but throw me off occasionally on things like the Poliwog, Phoenix, and the "S" (no offense).

I have to agree on the thumb studs. That's why I like Spyderco so much. I'm also (as a southpaw) not too fond of liner locks. Sad too because I have really wanted to get my hands on a Military.

Edited to add that I have just become a complete liar. I just snagged a military for 65.00. After I posted this I saw that no one had bid on it with 30 seconds to go.
