Is the Urban Out?

#1

Post by Halfneck »

I was checking out a online dealer and they had the Urbans priced & listed. Is this just them getting ahead of the game, or are the Urbans available?

Thanks.

FWIW, I recall seeing some retailers listing the Urban's ETA as the first week of February.

I'm anxiously awaiting the wharncliffe model!

I think the Urban is out.

I've been waiting (like many) for the release of the Urban. I had gone to my only local Spyderco retailer in my area last week and asked them to check it's availability. At that time, they called Golden but no luck; they just said it was not yet available.

Well . . . today my local place called me out of the blue and said Spyderco had called they to make them aware that it was out (and of course did I want to order one).

That's great news! Was it for both models, or just one?

Darn near positive that the Urban has not yet been released...

My local place was giving me the option of either the FG or orange. I did not get into blade configurations.

Whichever color handle you get is going to determine the blade style. Green is leaf-shaped blade, orange is wharncliff, and AFAIK they're not going to mix & match at the factory. So if by chance you wanted a green wharnie you'd need to buy both versions and do the swap yourself.

Blades and colors.

So you can't mix and match the handle colors and blade types? I thought I read in a previous thread that that was an option. :(

I was hoping to get an Orange leaf shaped blade. Oh well, I'll think about what version I want. Maybe I'll spring for both. :D

ouch, the price is steeper than I guessed.
I would have thought $10-$15 less than the UKPK, not the same price.
I guess I'll just get one finally, not both. (I wanted a green wharnie, now I don't know which one to choose)

BTW, the purple ladybug is on Spyderco's online catalog now too.

Its a fraction of the size of a UKPK, but not a fraction of the price. Bummer. Looks like I will be awaiting this one for longer than I thought.

Would have fancied an Urban in orange with a leaf blade. As it's not an option and the price is a little high I'll just have to complete my UKPK/DKPK collection with an Orange UKPK. ;) :D

I saw them at Cutlery Shoppe.

Yes, the price is more than I thought it would be. Still I will most likely get one, just not as soon as I had hoped. Honestly my biggest problem with the price of the Urban is that I find myself thinking "Hmmm $40 or so more and I could get the new Native?" Decisions, Decisions.

Roger shipped my Orange Wharncliffe Urban to day. He told me he got 4 in yesterday and has a larger order he was expecting in a few days. Roger and the people at Knifeworks are great to deal with. I have a UK Pen Knife that I like a LOT! This Slipit works great and I love the thin sharp edge.

No S30V? Oh well. Not that VG-10 is bad, but I have grown to love the S30V on my UKPK. It's held up incredibly well.

As it stands, I'll wait on the Urban. Just a bit too spendy for me right now.

Actually we had sticker shock as well. It should be higher based on cost, but we're running low and trying to figure out ways to make a less expensive version. The knife is made in Seki and the Yen is very strong these days.

Right now, FRN scales seems like the only possibility.
