Care to see what's in it? New Spydercos of course! :)

I've wanted these models for a while. Still waiting on the Urban to come out and that should do it for the year.

Caly3

#3

Post by CTfam »

Thanks, I'd like to switch gears a bit if I may. I've been playing with the Caly3 for about an hour. It is everything I was hoping it would be.

My only complaint is the action is very gritty feeling. I've read many posts that say the Caly3 is the smootest Spyderco they own. I must say it feels worse than my Byrd Robin which I complained about in my review of it.

My Delica is smooth as butter. Anything I can do to help this? Will it break in and loosen up on its own? It's pretty bad.

I had EXACTLY the same problem and some light oil in the pivot area and where the lockback bar contacts the blade seems to get the grit out of there.

I just put a few drops in, worked it in, another few drops, worked it again. Then I gave it a good rinse and finished it up with some tuff-glide. My Caly 3 really is the smoothest knife I have now.

Congratulations! The Caly3 is a fine knife. I'll bet cleaning it like Ainsley says will make it smooth as butter. What is the other, a dragonfly? It looks like you're trying to show the stamp. What steel is that?

Yeah, it's a D'fly. I wasn't sure if it would come in VG-10 because it was listed as AUS-8. This knife is for loose carry in the pocket. I think I'm gonna dremel off the clip. We'll see...

Congrats on your new toys and I am very sorry if you are kind of dissatisfied with Caly3. Probably after few opening and couple drops of oil it will get much better. I got mine more than two years ago, I couldn't wait to get it since I saw Wouter's picture from Amsterdam show. This is my love since first sight. Amazing knife.

Hi CTfam,

nice vid! We all do know that feeling.... :D

Regarding the Caly problems:
Try to loosen the pivot screw as much as you safely can without having it fall out, and then open and close the blade repeatedly under running water, even while depressing the lockbar; additionally, rinse it out thoroughly while moving the blade horizontally to allow the water to rinse out the space between blade and liners. Maybe a q-tip will help to clean it further after that. After drying the kife with a towel and/or air and retightening the screw, the gritty feeling should be nearly gone, even without oiling it. If it's still "raspy", you can loosen the screw again and try to flush out possible dirt with WD-40. That should do the trick.

If all that fails, you could always send it in and let Spyderco have a look at it, since a Caly should be a charm to open and close. I own a G-10 (which opens smoothly) and a CF version, and the action of the latter is just incredible for a lockback knife. Moves nearly without resistance.

You got 2 of my favorites. Nice choices. My UKPK has been my new favorite. If you like the Caly check it out.
So many knives, so few pockets... :)

Thanks guys! :D

I've been packing the Caly3 for a few days and I'm in love! What a great knife. I wouldn't change a thing about this :spyder: perfection. I hope they keep this model just the way it is for many years to come. The gritty feel of the action is getting better. I thought it was good until I pulled out my Delica. It's still not as good as my trusty D4. I haven't oiled it yet but it's good enough.

As far as the D'fly. Ehh, let's just say I'm waiting for the Urban to come out. I will dremel off the clip and throw it in the suit pocket for office carry. Neat little blade that will get some pocket time but it's no secret it needs a face lift.

Great products, I'm very happy. Have a good day!

Curious, what other knives do you have to compare?

In regards to what? The action of the Caly3 or the D'fly?

I also have a Ladybug, Delica 4 and Byrd Robin from the Spyderco line.
