Fillet blade

#1

Post by hickster »

Now that I have been bitten by the knife making bug (thanks to the Mule Team program), I'm looking to make myself a really good fillet knife. Does anyone know of a place to get a 7"-9" (for salmon) fillet blade in ATS-34, 154CM, S30V, or some other high quality stainless? Are the aforementioned blade materials flexible enough for a good filet blade?
Thanks,
hickster

Texas Knifemaker supply

Post by JD Spydo »

I visited a booth at a knife show. The booth was that of TExas Knifemaker Supply. They had a kit for making a fillet knife. If I remember correct the blade in the kit was 440c.

Actually we need the Catcherman back.

ragweedforge.com He sells some nice blades. Once inside go to his blade catalogue. Heres 2 that I liked made by Helle.

"Steinbit". It is just over 6", thin (just .087" at the base) and flexible, $16.50
Th "Hellefisk". It is about 5" and a little stiffer in the Norwegian style (about .090" at the base), $15.

Good Luck,
Larry

I'm not sure any of those steels, and especially S30V, would be a good choice for relatively long, thin, narrow, and flexible blade.

Interesting question.
What I do know is that you can get ATS 34 heattreated to a spring tention.
A friend of mine makes real good and classy backlocks with the lockbar and
spring in one piece.

Heat-treatment

#7

Post by Ed Schempp »

Phil Wilson has fine tuned the heat treatment for several of the CPM steels from Crucible. Most all his blades are running over RC 56. The geometry of the grind and the thinness of the blade will have everything with the flexibility of these steels. I have a CPM S60V fillet knife from Phil that will flex 90 degrees.

K and G finishing supplies, Trugrit, Sheffield, all sell fairly decent blanks of fairly good steels.

Buy the "Knives" "whatever year" as a resource directory for all knife related stuff...Take Care...Ed
