Urban Question

#1

Post by mrd74 »

Like many here, I am anxiously awaiting the arrival of the new leaf blade Urban. I was wondering if it can be closed the same way it is opened, by using the thumb in the hole or does the blade spring tension make closing it this way restrictive?

Hello,
I cant speak the Urban;

But with the UKPK, it is hard to close the knife one handed with the spyderhole.

Theres too much resistance to sorta "Close it in reverse" But, maybe mine hasnt seen enough usage.

Its easiest to push on the spine, and when it gives, it sorta quickly snaps closed.

As for the magic date of the Urban's arrival... The current date I have is December 31.

But, that ETA date will most likely change. ETA dates dont tend to be that concrete around here.

I got my Orange UPK about a 4 days ago from NGK and love it. You can close it one handed my pressing on the back/spine of the blade with your thumb with just enough force to close or unnotch the blade and then roll the knife in your hand and finish closing with your thumb. When I first close the blade slightly I have my index finger in the choil so the knife can only move about a half inch to close. I was a little nervous first but I now prefer this knife to my locking knives Caly3 in G10 and one in Carbon Fiber. I may have to get the FG UPK next. Good luck and just be slow and careful at first.

I've been carrying a leaf Urban in Foliage Green for about a week. It's a production sample. Shouldn't be much longer.

I'm pretty stoked about these. I just reground one of my UKPK to be .13 behind the edge. Very thin, very very sharp!. Its a razor! Cant wait to get an Urban. I expect I will EDC one.

You can open the UPK like a locking Syderco but the Spyder drop want work because of the strength of the back spring. It can be thumbed open very easily. These UPKs are ground very thin and are great slicers!

@CTfam:
For some of us its unlawfull to EDC a locking one hand opened knife.
So the UPK is great and the Urban is unpatientcely awaited!

Have never handled the Urban but the UKPK can be opened one handed using the hole. There is more resistance than on a locking Spyderco, which makes it less comfortable to open that way if you have arthritis, but it's still easier to open one handed than a slipjoint with a strong backspring and a thumb stud would be.

Same for me, but the reality is that nothing appeals to everyone.

The Urban, like most Spydercos, was designed to fill specific needs. If your needs don't match a given design's intent, then it's not for you. Spyderco sells world-wide and, like it or not, the legal trend in Europe today is toward restricting the carry, and in some places even the ownership, of locking folders. Those of us who can still carry locking folders have less reason to consider purchasing non-locking ones. At least for the time being, but anyone who thinks "it can't happen here", no matter where "here" is, may be in for a rude awakening.

That said, in the here and now, if you're looking for a locking folder about that size, a Kopa might suit you.

I hear you. It looks like a great design and I'm sure there wouldn't be a problem with it folding up if you're using it properly. Just throwing out my opinion. That's what lurking on the internet is all about right? :D I'm patiently waiting for the new D'fly but the Urban does look perfect in everyway. ( Except the lock thing of course.)

I hope they don't try that non-sense law against locking folders here but I wouldn't be suprised. "Change" is here. :rolleyes:

You should try one one before you knock it. It may surprise you. I haven't carried my Caly once since I got a UKPK. The tension is sufficient to feel secure during my menial day to day tasks. I always have a second locking blade on me if I need it. If the Urban is a bit cheaper than the UKPK, I will eventually pick one up.
