Police 3 Weight Question

#1

Post by imhawley »

Been lurking here and enjoying all the insight about Spyderco offerings. I've recently been bitten by the Spyder and have 7 knives to show for it:

Sage
Para (black PE blade)
Delica ZDP BRG
Delica G10 FFG
Salt 1 Yellow
Centofante 4
Endura 4 White FRN

I'm carrying the E4 today and the postage scale here at work says it weighs 3.9 ounces (close to the advertized 3.6 ounces). While I realize that G10 is heavier than FRN, I find it hard to believe the the Police 3 weighs 5.0 ounces considering it's thinner blade and profile. Does the Police 3 really outweigh the Endura by that much? I'm considering an order but am concerned about the weight.

Thanks in advance for the help.

Just weighed both. 3.75 oz. for the Endura IV, 4.75 oz. for the Police III on my scale. Blades are the same thickness, and the Police is a good half inch longer, so that could account for some of it. Endura liners are nested, Police liners are full size and, like the blade, its handle is about half an inch longer. Police liners may be a tad thicker as well, only way to tell would be to take the Endura apart and I'm not about to do that.

Thanks Deacon, that makes perfect sense.

From what I've read here, it sounds like the Police 3 carries extremely well for it's size. I'll think I'll pull the trigger on faith.

Glad I could help. I prefer loose carry in my back pocket, so neither it or the Endura work well for me. But, for those who carry clipped, the Police III rides very nicely in a front pocket. Clip and mounting locations are roughly the same as the Endura's so it should have about the same "exposure".

Back Pocket

With the exception of my Endura, I too have removed all the clips and carry loose in the bottom of my back left pocket. The para is a tight squeeze with some pants but the others ride fine.

I really do not want to sound like a broken record, but the Police 3 is one heaven of a folder. I have been carrying two of them for the last two weeks and they carry small and cut big. It is a larger than normal folder, but one of my students is 5'7 160 pounds and as soon as I put one in his hands..............he ordered one. Oh by the way, his current edc is a Chinook 3.

Small guys carry big folders too. :D The Police 3 gets away with the goods because of the thin package. Get one, you will not be sorry. The last thing you will think about is weight with the P3. This is a refined classic that Spyderco smacked out of the ballpark. My pair are on duty with me daily! ;)

As others have said the weight is not the issue, I would believe these guys, but I am concerned with the length, but once again I hear nothing but praise, so go for one, it might scratch that itch.

I thought it might feel a bit large to me before I got one, but after carrying one for weeks I can't say size has ever once been an issue. It carries exceptionally well for how long and heavy it is. If you find anything to not like about the knife it won't be carry issues, considering how thin the knife is and the four way clip mounting. The blade geometry is wonderful, even thinner than the Military. Quickly became one of the favorites in my collection.

I had the same thoughts as Vivi on the Police 3 - it would feel large. It's actually quite deceptive how large it really is. It carries surprisingly light. I've had mine for about a month now and carrying it quite regularly (I'm at home "in between" consulting contracts, so I can carry as many as I like :D ). For me, it always amazes me when I open it - that's when you realize how big it is :)

Sal, you did a great R&D job on the Police 3, its my most favourite spydie in the line-up at the moment.

As for the weight, the E4 is lighter, but if you compare the good old SS Police and the Police3 - there is SOME difference there.
