Spyderco SPOT

#1

Post by cyberspyder »

A friend helped me and bought this for another friend at the factory sale...sheath completed today and modified with crescent cutout for finger draw. Compared with another Perrin design, the La Griffe, the choils were a bit 'limiting'. It felt like the fingers HAD to go there, even when it's unnatural. IMO, I prefer a Perrin design without the choils (like the LaGriffe).

BTW, the reason on why it's second was probably due to the unfinished inside surfaces of the handle cutout---otherwise, everything's perfect, including the hair popping edge. Skinned the SPOT immediately with some 550 paracord sheath, and had a sheath made by James McGowan (paracord sheath-covered ball chain). The skinning part was harder than the LaGriffe, primarily due to the choils and the fact that I couldn't get a nice flowing wrap.

Now, some pics:

Congrats on the Spot! You took some great pics and I love the sheath mod.

The Spot is a good little knife. Hope you aren't too disappointed you like it less than your other knife.

Nice pics, it was interesting to see the pic with the SPOT / LaGriffe next to each other. Both great knives.

Hi Cyberspyder,

Thanx for the comments and the great pics.

Fred's "Index finger hole" was a really great concept. We use Fred's concept with his permission and we pay him royalties for having created the idea. (on all of the models).

The SPOT design was the result of a forum request for a neck knife. Fred's index finger hole (IFH?) is hard to beat for security (hard to drop) and permits the fingers to be used without dropping the knife.

The LaGriffe was too small for my liking. I have a custom serrated LaGriffe that Fred made for me many years ago, and I carried it quite a bit.

I realize that the finger indentations "force" a position". I felt this was the best insurance against twist and provided the most security and control of that cutting edge. (Which could conceivably be used with great force).

I apologize that it didn't hit your hand in a natural psoiition. It is a very difficult design task to "force" a position that accomodates all hand shapes and sizes, but we are improving that concept all of the time, a mm at a time.

The "Swick" model was a refinement of the SPOT design and the ergos fit more hands "naturally" than the original SPOT. The Caspian Salts also are more accomodating.

BTW, we've got a sprint run of "Swicks" in the works. 500 pcs, no scales, no sheaths, CPM-S30V warncliffe, A little different from the first run in that we've added the "trademark" round hole as we have been doing with fixed blades of late.

We had quite a few requests to do another run. If it's well received, we'll do a sprint in a leaf style blade shape.

SWEET! Thanks Sal, and yes I agree, designing is often the longest, painstaking part in the process.

A new Swick sounds awesome, I've been trying to find a used one for months now with no success.

Holy Mackerel....

This is so cool, so cool, so cool. I love my Swick, and my brother has been trying to con it off me for quite some time..... And I would be very happy to have another.

And a leaf shaped blade? Holy Cow.... Too Cool, Too Cool....

Personally I would love to see a slightly larger Swick that could more naturally accommodate a larger blade in the same design as the original. The Swick was my first real Spyderco and I was lucky enough to get what I think is the last one off ebay. I have not seen one available since I purchased mine.

Any Swick you make though, I will purchase, leaf blade, anything. You may want to up your sprint run to 1000, because I know a lot of people will want one, even two if they can get them (I want three :) ).

As per your mentioning of adding a trademarked spyderhole like you have done in you other fixed blades (like the Street Beat, my third Spyderco, second favorite) I kind of though of the index finger hole as an enlarged Spyderhole. Maybe that was not your intent since it is technically not in the blade itself, but It still counts for me.

I am glad you are making another run of Swicks, whatever you do. I had to force myself to put mine away so as not to damage it. I really want to carry mine, but I could never forgive myself if I damaged it or lost it somehow.

I have a question, what are the pros/cons of a leaf blade shape (caly3) vs. the shape of the stretch II. In other words, what are the premises behind the two blade designs? What are the designed purposes for these two blade shapes? BTW, I can't wait for the postman to get here with my new stretch II, and I love my Caly3. I'm looking forward to having a slightly longer pocket scalpel. I can't wait to try out zdp-189 also.
