Dragonfly II with CF and premium steel - When????

#1

Post by DWRW »

AWESOME custom modification by Tricod a little over a year ago: Custom G-10 scales and wire clip mods:

Tricod wrote:One of the first spyderco knives I picked up was a FRN Dragonfly. Great little knife. I just always felt the handle and clip were a little lacking.

This was my answer. As well somewhat inspired by Gullwing's G-11 dragonfly.

So here you go. I also recommend that anyone with the dragonyfly add jimping, it makes all the difference in the world.

YES!!!!! But, I would LOVE Carbon Fiber instead of G10 and S30V or VG10 (... or S90V or ZDP would be VERY fine with me as well ;) )

- I like the wire low-ride clip too!

The G-10 version will have a skeletal liner and L/R wire clip.

Once that model is on the street for a while, we'll re-do the FRN version.

Me thinks you will be pleased sooner than you expected.

At first I was a little worried that the liner would add to much weight. Well let me say the prototype I handled was fantastic. I retract my old thoughts of it being linerless, and accept that liners are for sure need for long term use.

I would buy the wire clip tip-up CF or G-10 with VG-10 for sure. The only thing that would deter that purchase is the rumor of an updated tip-up Caly Jr. An updated Caly Jr would come first for me.

Tricod - the modded D'fly looks great!

Great to hear Tricod. I will be no look-out.

Any info on what steel? Or if Carbon Fiber might be in the works?

The 2009 Catalog shows the Dragonfly listed with VG-10.

... But, I don't see any noticable changes and no jimping (that I can see in the pictures).

Am I missing something??? I have the ZDP CF Caly III on my short list and all pics I have seen of the CF and G10 versions ARE tip up.

mrappraisit, the last Calypso Jr. rumor I heard was Sal saying he was done with that design, and since reversing the clip would require a new mold if it were to be FRN, I would advise against holding your breath while you are waiting.

DWRW, the Dragonfly in the 2009 catalog is still the old model. The steel update was made this year, but there were still a lot of AUS-8 units in the system, so the VG-10 black FRN Dragonflies are not yet too common.

How about we wait until they have the G-10 version out before we start clamouring for a CF/unobtainium version?

A dragonfly in CF and ZDP with a nice tip-up wireclip would be amazing! Pretty much a mini-cf/zdp caly III

Fair enough .... I guess  But, from my perspective. I would much rather have CF.

I have generally been very fond of G10 for folders and prefer G10 over FRN or solid stainless.
However, thanks to Spyderco, I am now a HUGE fan of Carbon Fiber scales on my folders. I love the look, feel and weight.

While the Dragonfly would appear to be a great beater knife in FRN or G10 if cheap, I would pay a little more for a "NICE" version in CF.

It seems to me the Dragonfly in CF would be a nice light-weight front pocket EDC "Dress" knife as a nice alternative to a Kopa or Kiwi.
Usually, when I carry a "Beater" type knife I am wearing more casual clothes and will almost always ultimately opt for a larger blade.
So, to me, the Dragonfly is a "size" more suited for my uses as a front pocket EDC "Dress" knife. As such, I would MUCH rather have nicer and lighter Carbon Fiber.

I might go ahead and pick up a Dragonfly in FRN as a possible "Light-weight" version for when wearing sweats, work-out clothes or similar (????)

I would be happy with VG10 - especially on the FRN version. And I consider VG-10 to be VERY good user steel that is also very practical.
But, for a G10 or CF version, S90V would be better and although I haven't tried it yet, it seems like laminated ZDP would be best!

You could have Brad (Tricod) make you a CF D'Fly. The more I think about that, the more (and more, and more, and more...) I like it. So now that my gears are turning...

Brad, are you able to nest a liner into a custom CF D'Fly?

While I would like to have a CF/unobtainium Dragonfly as well, introducing a new model (or in this case, a redesigned model) in extra-expensive materials is probably not a good plan for commercial success. We afi's are a relatively small market. Sal introduces models just for us from time to time, but he usually can't afford to keep them in the line-up for long. We just don't buy enough of them to keep them going. I'd rather wait a while longer for the dream Dragonfly than see a great little knife flop because Joe Average won't pay $100 for a two-inch knife.

Excellent point, Yab. I think Brad and Steve (STR) can tide us CF people over until Spyderco does a factory--if they do a factory edition.

Hello DWRW, you may be thinking of the Caly(Calypso)III which is tip-up, while I was talking about the Calypso Jr, which was only built in tip down configuration. See photo for difference:

Yab - I should have written "would be" the rumor. I know he said no more Caly Jr., but if people can keep hoping for more hawkbills I can hope for an updated CalyJr, cant I? ;)

Mrappraisit, you are correct. I was thinking the Caly III and Calypso Jr. were the same except handle material. :o

..... pretty close.

I am super excited for the D'fly 2. I am a huge fan of jimping. I have added it to several of my 8 Dragonflies and many of my other Spydercos. It seems like this is one of the most frequently mentioned Spydies in the works. Should be a hit for the Spydercrew...

Sal, you wouldn't want to share a picture of the proto with us would you? :D
So many knives, so few pockets... :)
