Problem with my Caspian

#1

Post by Rhiney »

Hi everyone,

I am a big Spydie fan....I have a few Millies, a carbon fiber Sage, a few of the Tenacious, a D'Allara, Tasman Salt and Pacific Salt...the list goes on...

I use my Caspian for scuba diving. I love the knife, the ergos, and the H1 steel. But here's the problem...the pin screws that hold the FRN grips to the handle are not H1. They are rusting badly, and the rust actually looks like it's dripping down the blade etc. Now, the cosmetics don't matter much to me, but when I tell my buddies "hey, check out my rust-proof knife" and they see a bunch of rust, that isn't good. I'm even more concerned that the pins will rust through...I could remove the FRN grips, but they are useful. Besides, I do think that my pricey knife that is "rust free" shouldn't require me to give up the grips...

Is anyone else experiencing this problem? Any fixes?

Thanks much!

Rhiney,

Please send the knife in to our Warranty and Repair department. This should not be happening, and we would love to take a look at it.

Are you sure it was the screws? It may be the logo, as the first few times I dove with it the logo rusted and streaked down the blade. It cleaned off easy enough. I believe some metal powders were in the cracks of the laser engraving and thats what was rusting.

Just a suggestion. Maybe your knife got the wrong screws.

Edit: After re-reading your post it seems the rusting is pretty advanced, so you can probably disregard my first statement.

Will do, thanks very much. I am in Vancouver Canada, so it may take a few days, but I greatly appreciate your fast and courteous response...another reason why I buy so many Spydies!

Oh, and thanks Perceive...the logo did rust, but that is purely cosmetic. The screws were my main concern because I don't want to lose the nice, grippy, FRN handles -- they make the grip very secure under water, and this is my primary dive knife.

Oh, by the way, for anyone else who is a diver and considering the Caspian...I took a piece of 1 1/2 inch braided poly marine rope and tried to cut it with the Caspian and with another of my dive knives. The other knife is a good quality titanium knife. The titanium knife took heavy pressure and 6 passes to cut the rope. The Caspian, with moderate pressure, ripped through the rope in two passes. And the Caspian had a shorter blade to work with. It's a great knife.

Sorry to hear about this.

I used my caspian all summer long and like the other poster, I got rust on the logo. Fortunately, it rubbed off the blade and the screws are still immaculate. I've made a total of 10 dives with it and have yet to rinse it off. NO RUST :D

Cheers,
Hector

i see that your are frm Canada....i am assuming either 1/4" full wet suit, maybe in the summer and dry suit the rest of the year...how does the caspian work with gloves on...that is my only gripe with the knife. my finger just fits into the big hole as it is but with gloves it just isnt going to happen. ill save the knife for warm water diving.
