sage woes
sage woes
Hello
Long time lurker and learner here. I recently received the Sage. At first glance and feel I thought 'yeah, now this is a perfect fit'. Then I tried to open it. Stiff as heck. I'm not one to fiddle with factory settings, so I didn't. I have a Manix and mini and can open them without any trouble. I found it disconcerting that a smaller knife would give me more trouble. Hmmmph.
I figured that I would just need some practice. On to new woes. The pocket clip was on the wrong side for me. Okay, I've seen some tight screws in my day but this little bugger was going nowhere fast. I was on the verge of stripping it before I stopped to give it a rest. Changing a pocket clip should take all of 2 minutes. Oi.
Anybody else experience any similar problems or am I defective? I'm befuddled for sure.

Hi Rose, and welcome!
My Sage is smooth as butter and was right from the start. I'd suggest you call the factory and see what they say.
As for the pocket clip, I agree with you, they should be a breeze to swap (though I rarely do). Haven't tried my Sage so I wonder if maybe they were loctite or something??
Good luck with it,
Ken

Just a couple of things to keep in mind. The Manix and Mini-Manix are backlock models, where the spring provides a positive closing bias. The Sage is a liner lock where only the detent keeps the blade closed. The Sage is also tip-up only, which makes it even more important to have a positive detent. That said, it sounds like yours is set a little tight. With the clip screw also being very tight, I think you should consider sending it in to Golden for a tune-up and clip swap.

I don't believe in safe queens, only in pre-need replacements.

There is nothing more important than this one day.

I agree, tip ups should be a bit stiffer. I do have a couple of tip ups from BM and have no problem. I like the tip to be out and locked by the time I get it out of pocket or waistband. Being a knife freakazoid I practice quick opens and some CQC with a practice folder. A great tool is only as good as it's operator! :)
I'm thinking you all are correct that factory settings may be a bit tight so I'm going to have it sent back for some adjustments. I must say I love the feel of it in hand and it tucks in the waistband nice and flat. Thanks for pointing out the obvious about the Manix/mini. It's easy to forget those little things.

The loctite will not solve the problem.
1. remove sage from box, drool over the unique CF finish
2. notice pivot is really stiff. "Hmm, we can fix that"
3. grab T9 torx and adjust pivot. Action still tight
4. Loosen pivot slowly until action frees up a little
5. notice blade is not centered and has too much play.
6. tighten pivot until blade centered again and no more play.
7. action stiff again.
8. open and close knife many times to break it in
9. accept the fact that this is the way it is, not that big of a deal

That knife needs cleaning and lubing.Phalanx7.62 wrote:The loctite will not solve the problem.

After disassembly and cleaning, I polished the washers with 3M Chrome and Metal Polish, polsihed the blade tang and liners, and made everything shiny.
I reassembled the knife and found the action to be the same. I took it back apart and noticed the non-locking liner is slightly bent.
Observe:

Is this normal? I think I will straighten it.

TA DA!!!!!!
My Sage is now the way it should be. I straightened the non-locking liner by bending it over my knee. That steel is very resilient so it takes some muscle to get it straight. The knife was reassembled and now it rides like glass.
Thanks in a way to El Tigre for suggesting the cleaning and lubing because I might not have thought about that.
I also think this Sage would benefit from a shouldered lock pin instead of a straight pin. This way the liners cannot pinch down at the pivot because they would be locked against the side of the lock pin.
Just a thought for Sal and Co.
