Dragonfly – the perfect Spydie?

#1

Post by fishtale »

The Dragonfly seems to epitomize every concept that Sal and Spyderco invented. It feels like a direct descendent of the original lineage.

1. It’s the ultimate Little Big Knife – rides great in the pocket but can take on large tasks.
2. Great blade - VG-10 steel, fully flat ground, leaf shaped
3. Half choil - for greater purchase and control
4. Pocket clip and Spydie hole – ‘nuff said
5. Mid-lock with Boyle dent

Bravo! Here's mine...

Yep, great little cutter.

Here's mine, with another SS handle, 2 inch blade Spydie.

I like the size, I don't like the tip down carry, lack of spine jimping and the grip area for the middle and ring finger feels to narrow for my hand.

The urban will fit me better I'd imagine. Very happy with my UK Pen Knife and they seem similar.

I can see why you guys like them, you have the SS versions. I love my white FRN Dragonfly, BUT with those plastic clips they will never make it to top of my Spydie list.

the dragonfly is my all time favorite I have used them for over 10 years.

I would like to see more belly on the blade and deeper choils, especially after using a Lava

I'd like to see a pic of the clip, if one of you would be so kind as to post one of the SS Dragonflies.

Here you go.... if you are fine with the etched version of the SS Dragonfly.

Not the best quality, but the best I could do without daylight :)

I got a Dragonfly Stainless about 7 years ago for being in a wedding. It is my favorite Spyderco. It is not my edc. Usually carry it when I get dressed up. Which is about 3 times a year. Without going to my safe, I think the blade is ATS34, not sure. With the full flat grind it is a real slicers. I don't care that it is tip down. It is not something I would use in a SD situation.

Not to be the master of the obvious , but the photo is tip up. My white (plastic clip) is also tip up.
(Agree, plastic clips are lame)

When was the change to tip up?

Thinking great x-mas gifts on the SS model ............

I picked one up on sale at the local Sports Authority last week. The only version they had was full serrated so I'll use it as a chance to check out a little-big in that iteration. It's proven up to any task I've tried it on. Only problem is my arthritic fingers can't open it the "normal" way. Gotta use two hands or Spyder-drop it. The weight of the stainless handles make it drop very well for a small knife.

I spent the weekend getting to know the Dragonfly. Mostly just dropped it in the RF pocket and use it for whatever needed cutting. Did some yard work, food prep and some whittling.

A few observations...

Out of the box, the action is pretty tight. A few days made a lot of difference, loosened right up.

The finger choil allows for a nice full fist grip. Lots of power and control.

There is a "hot spot" where my pinky finger grasps the handle. Not too bad but required some manipulation. High point is that the small handle allows a few different grip positions...proble solved.

All in all, I like the proportions very well. I anticipate it will make the office-to-weekend transition easily.

Just ordered a new one online for a x-mas gift.

Vendor had 3 NIB.

"SPYDERCO Dragonfly stainless plain edge knife C28P"

Is it an older model as its said to be ATS 55 rather than VG10?
But is tip-up.

Is it the same as the current model all but the blade steel?

Its the same knife and most likely not very old.
The change in steel is quite recent.
There is no need to shy away for ATS-55.
I dont find it a ''lesser'' steel than VG-10.
In fact, I really like it, and that is more importent then to must have the latest version.

Enjoy it, its a good knife.
Its sharpness makes up for its small size.

It could also have been a page that wasn't updated to the current steel.

Either way I'm sure you won't be disappointed.

I wish the :spyder: factory made the white FRN in SE though.

Together with my Military/SE and Delica 3/SE the SS Dragonfly/SE is my most favourite Spydie.

It fits my big mitt like a glove and the darn little bugger outcuts my Delica 4/SE.

Just kinda strage that the blade discourours a bit when I have it in my pocket for a while(Top of the blade dull and the part that sits in the handle still shiny  :confused :)

Image

Mine came with blade play and this is what I did to remedy that:

The action is nice and stiff now with the blade just barely sucking in when closing, just the way I like it ;)

Orange would be cool... I like the size of my Dragonfly better than the teenyweeny Ladybug, and that's the closest thing in orange.

As for steel, how many steels did the Dragonfly come in? Mine says 'AUS-8 STAINLESS' on it.

2 generation: FRN,flat grind : Aus 8 and VG-10

Dragonfly inox: Flat grind: ATS 55 and VG-10

Some of the Gen 1 D'flies were made in hollow grind Aus-8a as well.
