hi all,
I bought a spyderco lum chinese folder today. I really love the blade shape, etc, but have noticed that there are no washers on the pivot.
Is it supposed to have washers or what? the blade makes a gritty sound you would expect with no washers.
Thanks for your help.

Are you saying you disassembled it and there were no washers? Or just that you cannot see any when looking at the assembled knife?
I know that some all stainless Spydercos, as well as a few with steel liners, are constructed without washers, but would be surprised if that were the case with an aluminum handled knife. On the other hand, some of the washers Spyderco uses are extremely thin, like the cellophane on a pack of cigarettes or box of tea. Thus, they're not really visible unless you take the knife apart.

hi there
I didn't disassemble it, but I can see that there are no washers in it. It's really noisy opening up. I bought it BNIB.
Thanks!

Have no idea about washers but the knife sounds dirty. Tips for cleaning spydies:

I would just wash it really well and let it dry, or dry it with a hair dryer. I have gotten a couple spyders from Seki that were kind of dirty, but after a cleaning they were perfect.
I would just be very carefull washing that new Lum, for one thing its sharp, also you don't want to drop it in the sink and dent up the almite.

After enlightenment, the laundry.
thanks for the info. I wonder if I can put some washers in it and if it would make it smoother. I really like the knife so far, but it just sounds gritty and feels like it's missing the washers.mrappraisit wrote:Have no idea about washers but the knife sounds dirty. Tips for cleaning spydies:

Not about to take any of my Lums apart but I did a bit of digging and, if you are registered over on BladeForums, you can look a the photos in the first post of this thread. If you do, you will note that it shows a disassembled ZDP Lum and, among the parts are two washers.
Try washing the knife as suggested.
