Endura ZDP-189 Qs

#1

Post by jlavely »

Lately I have been considering the 3.75" Endura PE in ZDP-189. I take excellent care of my knives, clean them several times weekly, always coated in oil, and they hit the Sharpmaker at the near sign of a hang up in the blade. I currently have the Black Blade Millie PSE in s30v as well as an FRN native PE in s30v. I don't have any corrosion problems with these and I think S30V is a gift from god.

Now to the question, considering I do take care of my knives, would a ZDP-189 blade be right for me? I am looking for the people that have experienced a ZDP blade and I am wondering how they hold up with corrosion. Any input would be excellent.

Thanks!

i never coated mine with anything..i just wipe it clean after it gets wet/dirty. i would say order one through mr krein (he has a dealer he can get it through and you wont have to pay extra shipping charges) and have him flat grind it...it is alot easier to sharpen imo and it cuts like nobody's business. also stick with pe..just my 2 cents on that.

do a search with his name and you should find some posts with pics and reviews.

oh and WELCOME!!

Considering the amount of care you invest in your knives, there's not much to be afraid about.

That said, I own one of the knives in question and after a hot summer day of EDC in my sweaty pants, there were spots of staining on the blade. I eventually took care of that giving it a custom flat grind (which I recommend to all E4ZDP owners IF they're not "hard" users), but depending on your body chemistry there is a possibility to encounter that, too. BUT this is only a cosmetical problem, and if you otherwise keep your E4 clean and dry, it wouldn't get worse.

Other users, including The Deacon, never had any problem with their ZDP knife staining... go figure :)

I use my ZDP blades regularly and don't take near the care that you describe. I haven't experienced any rust or pitting. All of my ZDP blades have developed a darker color or patina. When cutting acidic fruits you can get some darker almost stain-like spots on the blade, visible in certain angles of light. I don't consider that 'rust' though'. I get the occasional spot or rust on the inside of the holes in various steels though, from a lack of cleaning. It always comes off completely with a good polish.

I have a ZDP D4 that I took to Kauai for a week. It didn't go in the ocean, but we did get caught in the rain 3 or 4 times, and I used it on a variety of food, with no ill effects. With your current maintenance habits I wouldn't worry about it.

I do little to care for my ZDP Endura other than wipe it clean when it gets dirty and try to keep it reasonably dry. Have had a couple rust spots form, but they wiped off quickly. Have carried this knife for almost a year in some pretty rough conditions, and the steel holds up fine. You shouldn't have to worry about it at all.

I've carried a SE ZDP Endura almost every day since Fathers day 07'. I've never had any problems with discoloration, pitting or rust. I guess it's the Tuff cloth, use once or twice a year or wipe down the blade to get off tape residue etc etc. BTW I've never experienced any problems with the serrations, and I've only had to touch up the blade once in 2 1/2 years. :D
