Quite honestly I was a bit underwhelmed with the JD Smith knives spyderco did some years ago including the ZDP sprint. I can't really articulate what I didn't like about them; they just turned me off.

This one, however, might have started to change my mind. It has elements that I like such as dual liners, a truly ambidextrous lock, 4 way clip drilling, grippy scale material and improved ergonomics, but I think it's going to take more than pictures to sway me entirely.

I did notice a few deliberate details that might make me say that this is not so much a JD Smith design, but rather a collaboration between Sal and JD.

Reminds me of a cross between a Ti Buck 560 and a Lg Sebenza.

:confused: One of us is confused here. I could be wrong, but as far as I know there has only ever been one Spyderco - JD Smith collaboration model and the knife in Kristi's photos is a prototype for the first Sprint Run version of that model. Have I missed something? Or are you, perchance, mixing Jess Horns and JD Smiths?

I too like the dual liners on this one. It looks more balanced this way and will make having one rescaled easier. Am also very glad to see the lockbar has not fallen victim to boyedentitis. :D

I'm very pleased with that sprint run. The dual linners are a great improvement. I don't care if it has Full flat grind or saber grind, I'll buy one.

The absence of the boye-dent looks good to me. It gives the knife an "old skool" look, but in a good way :) .

What steel will be used ? VG-10, CPM-S30V, or something similar "sharpenable" ?

This is one model I have wanted for some time , it has such beautiful simple lines . Anyone know blade size ? Appears to be close to 4 inches ? Will the scales be G10 or CF ? I can live with either , and like Paul hope that lock stays as is on final production run , definitely looks right . MG2

Can't help with the scale material, but I just measured my original one and the blade is 3 13/16".

Full flat VG-10 blade with foliage green G-10 scales, dual liners and a 4-way clip.

They took the original and made almost every change on my wish list. Blue G-10 would make it perfect, but as it is, I can't wait for this one to be released.

I forgot photos were being posted on Monday. I think the blade grind shown in those photos looks nice.

Kristi: is that the "official" photo location for the factory? That toolbox lid is the same setting used for the Mule photos that were posted back in January or February.

No, that's the "official" photo spot in my office. The Tool box is actually a handmade box that was my Grandfather's. Inside it are all of his knives and sharpening steels that he used in WWI. He was an Army cook.

Thanks Taz.....I'm going to have to buy one when they come out. I'm REALLY liking the
tip-up/tip-down/L/R configuration...oh and full liners on the C58GPFG, **** YEAH!! The blade should be wicked in FF.....but I like the grind on the prototype. Any chance of picking up a proto?? Pretty please!!

The JD Smith and the big C-54 Calypso are 2 of my ALL TIME favorite conventional Spdyerco blade designs. Both blade designs are borderline perfect. They are classic folding knives that virtually any knife lover can appreciate. It just goes to show you that the truly excellent designs never die.

Both blades possess a simplistic elegance that you almost can't put into words. They are truly the equivalent of a "Picasso or Dali" in the world of KnifeART.

8.6" Overall
5" Closed

The original had Micarta Handles... the Sprint will have Foliage Green G10 handles
The Sprint Run will have a Full Flat Ground blade, and a 4-way clip

I am hoping that the Sprint will have a David Boyle Dent, Jimping on the thump ramp... and that the grind goes further back, maybe a 1/4 inch or so.

I am very :D interested in the new Sprint JD Smith.... in spite of the Foliage handles.
