Were they thinking the clip helps in opening and closing?

With the smooth micarta, maybe it was thought the clip position by the pivot helps manipulate the knife by giving the front fingers something to pinch onto.

Just a thought.

Tony, am not at home right now, but IIRC the original large micarta Goddard was tip down too. So I think it more a case tip up being on the FRN out of expediency. Tip down would have required Calypso Jr like studs to provide a secure mounting.

Just checked my old micarta large and Paul is right.
We would rather be the knife in your pocket, because is "works" better, than the knife in your showcase, because it "looks" better.

And, just to be clear, the baby Goddard C-20 did not have a clip. It was more of a keychain knife, like the Ladybug. Then there were the Goddard C-16 and Goddard Jr. C-18 I think they were both down (though I only have the full sized).

Additional questions maybe?

Regarding the Large Goddards with the black micarta handles... I've read that there were pocket clip differences... anyone able to clarify this for me? Also, I've heard that the large ones came in pouches instead of a box - what does that pouch look like? Did it have Spyderco or anything else written on it?

I have a chance to get one of the early large Goddards (numbered under 075) for around $125 with "a pouch" but the guy's not certain if it's an original pouch for the knife or not...

Any and all help is welcome!

Mine didn't come in any kind of pouch. Not saying some didn't. It's a great knife! Got the large and the baby. Never did get the Jr....

Great score!

I've got #416- tip down, came in a box, no bag. Maybe the lower-collector- numbers came in a bag?

Have a lot of my boxes packed away in a box  ;) but IIRC, mine came in a box as well. However, again IIRC, the ones sold directly by the Goddards may have come in pouches. Believe the Juniors they sold did. As for the clips, mine is black and AFAIK that's normal for them. Have seen one with a sliver clip, but don't recall who had it. Problem with clips is they're easy to change, so without official confirmation that both types were used on the micarta C16 it would make me less inclined to purchase one with a silver one unless the seller was someone I knew and respected.

My C-16 Goddard is tip up carry. The clip is mounted at the lanyard hole, like on the Native. It's an older one; the blade is ATS-55 and on the handle it says "Clipit Goddard" around the Spydie emblem. Did this originally come in a bag?

Ok....interesting. Looking more closely mine is #446. It has a silver clip, is G-2, has the Design by and the Wayne Goddard signature etched/engraved in the blade. I bought this new from the original Ironstone in Golden.

LOTS of info already... You guys really rock!

Interestingly enough, this knife seems to be one of the real oddballs that came out from Spyderco... seems as if there are quite a few variations here...

FWIW, this one may have come directly from Wayne as the guy I'm getting it from (who's an avid collector of knives that AREN'T Spyderco) reputedly knows him personally. :D

Keep that info coming!!! :spyder:

All of them have the Goddard signature. The fact you purchased it from Ironstone makes me more inclined to accept the silver clip as factory installed.

Think you have that backwards. Spyderco is notorious for making "on the fly", undocumented changes to models. :D
