What if...
Personnally the first thing to do is to avoid the fight : run, deter. Life is too precious. Then if the fight is unavoidable, use the environment : sun, position... Use what you find as improvised weapons, like trash can, bottle, belt, sand, whatever...
If you are always equipped I totally agree with the asp fans (like me ;-)) since you know how to use it properly.
In fact any choice is good since you know what you do and you do it correctly...

Yeah thanx guys, the maximum size baton I can get here is 26 inch, which should be plenty in terms of reach, in my mind(may be wrong) I wouldnt wanna go for something to long, thinking that what if the attacker gets up close, the shorter baton to me might be a bit easier to use.
Im definately gonne get my hands on a casco 26 inch baton for me and my pal once he recovers.
Theyve just operated on him 2day, his lung collapsed again, so please, keep kevin in your prayers.

Great news! How far is the video series collapsible-baton-specific, and how much could be used with an ordinary stick/baton? And by the way, watching the stick portion of Grover´s Combatives series, I got the impression that Kelly McCann is trained in some Filipino style or the other (he even refers to some moves with the Filipino terms). I might be wrong, but do you know anything about the origin of his stick style (except he´s probably mostly based in WWII techniques à la Styers and Fairbairn)?

Kelly's tapes deal with all aspects of selecting, carrying, and using collapsible batons. As such, the use portion, which accounts for about 70 percent of the tape, would also apply to standard batons.
Kelly has trained in the Filipino arts and has adopted the aspects he feels are most compatible with his overall approach to combatives.
I have had the privilege of working with Kelly on several occasions and banging with his training group. If anyone out there is still not convinced, he is as real as they get and knows whereof he speaks.
