Hey Guys,
Just wondering what you all think of the Opinel twist knives, they are pretty inexpensive but from what I have heard they are very well made, and use a high carbon steel. Anyways just seeing if anyone has one or knows about one :spyder: :spyder: :spyder: :spyder:

Opinel knives are produced about 30 miles far from where I live, so I own couple of ones :D
It's a very simple knife, by the conception and the design, but they're really reliable, they have a good amount of cutting power and they're easy to sharpen, even if you made it real dull.
I got one that never leave my wastebag, I don't fear to abuse it.
From what I know, they're still assembled manually. The only automated operation is the insertion of the blade in the handle. I'm sure of that, since I know the man who automated this part of the production line.
Opinel N°8 is a bit too small for large hands, but it is THE "all purpose" knife

Good knives, very good cutters.
They have decent steel, I like carbon but the stainless they use is also good.
Carry one for a while and you will find it a very useful knife.

That's what I love about Opinel knives. You can make them sharp as **** with roughly anything :DJspyEDC wrote:The last vestige of inexpensive knives from the old country. I love how nasty sharp they get on the Sharpmaker.

Chivers
Before I discovered Spydies I always had Opinel pocket knives – they have great blade steel (the carbon is better than the stainless IMHO, the ring collar lock is just about idiot-proof, and if you have the time and patience you can customise the handle (checker the grip, carve the end etc). The only mod I did on mine was to file a semicircular indent in the handle to make the blade easier to access, as being wood the handle can swell in damp weather and make the knife stiff to open. My only gripe isn’t with the knife but with the good old UK government, who class all but the smallest (non-collared) Opinels as lock knives, which of course makes them illegal over here. You can, of course, knock the ring off but then you run serious risk of losing a finger. Those thin blades bite and yes, the Sharpmaker really does make them scary sharp. To paraphrase an advertising slogan for anti-smoking product Nicotinel "It needn’t be **** with Opinel".
