Amen. Im pretty sure if I slept with a knife on me the wife would make sure I was sleeping on the couch.

And to the nay sayers to a well defended home: I lived in a very nice area of a nice town while in high school, and we did have a break in on Christmas eve. Nothing happened save for the door being kicked in but it was enough for me to know the importance of a well defended home.

Yeah, burgler-proofing is a great idea, I agree w/ you...

...I guess the whole idea of this thread was not wearing a knife at night for self-defense purposes, but I was just curious if it's really doable to continue wearing a knife at night, too...not that I'm opposed to threads going off on tangents or anything--God knows I'm guilty of having done that a time or two  -- but I guess maybe I didn't make myself clear in the initial post. :)

Gandalfe, unfortunately B.C. is changing, and for the worse. Burglaries, home invasions, kidnappings, gang war shoot-outs, men disappearing, "known to police" bodies turning up every month. Everyone I know in Vancouver has had their car broken into repeatedly, my friend has had his cabin broken into repeatedly, my cousin was jumped from behind and savagely beaten by a group of thugs, right in front of his girlfriend, for no reason. He was down and out immediately, but that didn't stop them from taking the boots to his face, breaking his jaw, and kicking out most of his teeth. Three months ago, my parents woke up to find a burglar in their living room. My dad grabbed a golf club and chased him out the backdoor. My friend's apartment was broken into last week. And it's not just Vancouver....Red Scorpions in Victoria, Hells Angels in Kelowna, gangs fighting over drug turf in PG, the 'Highway of Tears', the list goes on. The Port of Vancouver is one of the biggest heroin shipment points in the world, and B.C. has the follow-on crime that goes along with that. In B.C. we always like to say things aren't as bad as other places, but what are those places? Per capita, B.C. crime is quite high now.

Sorry for my rant everyone. :o Gandalfe, be safe! :)

And back on topic, :) yes, I sometimes sleep with a :spyder: if I forget to take it out of the pocket of my PJs or shorts. I've never had a problem with it in my pocket while sleeping, and I toss and turn a lot.

One time and one time only have I had my home broken into in the middle of the night.
It was nearly 20 years ago now.... and I was a typical angst riddled teenager who had seen too much rambo and other MA movies etc...

...I heard the noises at the bottom of the stairs and grabbed the nearest thing I could... I was lucky in my choice of what I grabbed... because it could have been the crossbow, the compound bow, the kamas, a spear, katana.... I forget what else I had floating around, but back in those days no spydies for sure...

..anyway on with the light [silly that in hindsight] and I hear noises in the stairwell and see one of the biggest men I have ever seen charging up the stairs straight at me, I am clad only in underwear.... I ask the logical thing to ask in such a situation "Who the f$#% are you?" .. no response charge continues... so I neatly step to the side as he is about to tackle me and smash what I am holding down as hard as I can... what am I holding?

...a rubber sparring stick [clever and lucky that in hindsight]

He falls and the rubber sparring stick breaks leaving a wicked point on the end I am holding... I grab it with both hands about to stab down when two other people appear in the bottom of the stairwell guns at the ready and shout "police... " [all were plain clothed]

After seeing what else I had in the room they assured me that had they seen anything at all glinting in my hand they would have shot me there and then... and the local police were notorious for shooting people then... and let me tell you it was blind luck that I didnt pick up something shiny....

PS: The most reliable bedtime spydie is without doubt a mini-manix.

Here in Montana half of all breakins end in a homocide. Either way everyone up here has a gun.. Most on them at all times. Still we have problems, and I would rather not use a gun on a kid that broke in, I just want to scare him enough to change his perspective a little.. The forrester will do that quite well IMHO. Plus no noise.

Gear to Sleep In

#67

Post by KaliGman »

Actually, I sleep in my "Batman" body armor while hanging upside down in my cryogenic, sealed sleeping chamber, and while equipped, of course, with all my gear and weaponry. There is a sign on the glass door to the chamber which says "Break open only in time of War, Emergency, or when somebody's @#$ needs to be kicked." The last time I was awoken, it was not pretty--let's just say you can really hurt a supposed college student who is selling magazine subscriptions if you hit him hard and often enough with a stack of "Watchtower" pamphlets left by fleeing missionary types :p .

Sorry--couldn't resist.

Actually, I have never slept with knives or firearms. They are within reach should I need them, but not in my bed. If they were, I do believe that Mrs. Kaligman would have me sleeping on the couch.

I clip my carbon fiber left-handed PE Police model to my boxers when I sack out, not to fight off home invaders, but because that's the one I'd miss the most if my house burned down.

If anyone broke into my place, they'd either be deafened by howling beagles, or licked to death.

By the beagles. Licked to death by the beagles.

I think if I ever lived in an area that would even make me think about sleeping with a weapon, I would move and fast!!

If I lived in Baltimore I'd probably do both but I do not live in Baltimore.

Sleep with a knife? Only by accident.

LOL

Thank god I live in a reletively safe area so I can make these comments with a wink.
I AM a little bit nuts ;) but I am a certified professional locksmith too. There is no way to burglar proof anything. If someone made it, someone can get into it. All you can do is deter and impede. I live in a town that is in the top 10 of "best places to live" in the US, according to Money Magazine. We still have crime here. I also experienced a break-in while I was home and asleep. It can change your perspective. The break-in did not happen here though.

Glad you chimed in, KaliGman...was very curious to know what you and Doc S. had to say...I kinda had a hunch I'd get a ribbing w/this kind of thread but, hey, it's been pretty amusing... :D

I don't usually have a spydie clipped to me, but i have done it. I do have the routine down to a science. before turning the lights out, and then again after lights out, reach out and touch everything on the night stand. Closest to me is the cell phone, both because it is my alarm, and it is probably the first thing that i would need (911) in case of an emergency. then the mili, then the flashlight, then the loaded glock. if that isn't enough, it should get me across the room to the loaded 12 gauge pump in the cabinet. however the most important thing in the entire house is an good alarm- A DOG. gives you the upper hand if somebody decides to "welcome" themself into the home. I can be waiting at the top of the stairs ( that's my line in the sand)instead of still sound asleep. it seems a little obsessive for us out here in the country, where the carkeys are in the ignition and the house is unlocked and nothing ever happens, but rather be ready than get caught by surprise.

Your probably right. The few invasions I have had over the years I handled with roughing them up, a bit, with my fists.I prefer the use of non-lethal force, but would have wished for a gun or knife, if they were armed.I still don't like the idea of a loaded gun close by.Only once did I stoke up my SKS, Imagewhen a drug related gunfight spilled into my yard.I guess I better move to a safer local. I'm sleeping with my Chinook tonight. These posts are making me paranoid.

so far as needing this stuff to feel safe thats not really the deal
i have a dog here (not worth a dam thing for protection tho )she would rather be petted the to bark at any one.
im a few miles from any town and have just one other house on the hill. if some one wanted in locked doors or not they could. alarm sure and the state cops could be here in 30 min or so (hopefully)
do i fear sleep

no but i will dam sure be ready tho if something happens. i also take a little gear with me in the field when hiking (do i fear the hike )

no but
i would rather have and not need then to need and not have

Not in bed but on bedpost. Have a belt hanging with flashlight, 9mm, two more mags, endura, my cell ( put it in at night -take it out in AM) a rottweiller at the foot of the bed, and a mean, cranky, old lady ( with a similar belt on her bed post) beside me.
Pity the fool that interupts our sleep!!!
Opps- forgot about the 12 ga, and Marlin 1894 C (357) in the corner.
