Kris.............Crossed!

#1

Post by stonyman »

Folks, I just wanted to take time out to share my utter amazement with this Spyderco folder. My friend kaligman and some others have done extensive reviews on this folder. With all of the reviews and pics, it just does not do the kris justice! I received this folder in the mail from the gman on Monday and have just been speechless since then.

Opening the package, I remember saying "Wow, this thing is beautiful!" I never associate my work blades(All of my knives!) as beautiful. This is the most beautiful production knife I have held. It seemed to lock into my hand in hammer grip, cancer grip, reverse edge out, forward grip edge up, it just did not matter!

After temporary shaking off the beauty of this knife, I began to see the wickedness in function. In fact my mind went into overload with its sd uses. SEE Albokalisilat.org for a sneek peek of its effectiveness. I know I am repeating myself, but you have to handle this knife to appreciate it.

It is just so versatile that it is ridiculous. Keep it close and you have the heft of steel that can really change a channel. Open, well 4 inches of business. This knife is more like the nice gentlemen that doubles as a fierce fighter............ Me and my select band of bros! :D Anyway, my interest is totally peaked with any of Mr. Ed's design from here on. Great job Spyderco for bringing this to appreciative hands!

The only negative on this folder is the stiffness, but I believe this will smooth out after breaking in. Maybe some jimping on the rear of the blade, but other than that.......Great folder! I am totally impressed with this folder!

If you do not have a kris, stop what you are doing right now and go grab one. If you have to make arrangements to grab one, do it. You will not be sorry. It may not be some of your cup of tea, but the kris is a must have. It is one of my all-time favorite Spydercos along with the Yo,Adventurer, Pikal. The Yo and Adventura are two from very dear forumites. ;) Take care all and God Bless!

I agree with everything you said above, that was exactly what I thought of the Kris when I open the box. It is one of the most classy looking production knife ever!!!(until I get my Bob Lums that is :D )

My only complain would be how do you draw the knife fast? I have been been dropping the knife during practice due to the smooth texture of the micarta scales. Not to mention the lock up is very stiff, other than that it is a great looking and functional knife.

Lots of openings and closings along with time will break it in. I was just messing with my Kris yesterday, it's great. Congrats on yours. :D

Thanks for the write up. I have been eyeing this one very closely as of late. It's one of those knives that has been slowly seeping into my knife-consciousness to the point that I really think it will be my next :spyder: purchase. :D

I have completed a small video on how to draw and quickly deploy the blade on the Kris using some very simple techniques. There are more ways to draw and open the blade than I show on the video, but I cover some basics. The video will be available on my website in the next couple of weeks. There is a little demonstration video with the Rock Salt that should be ready at about the same time.

I love the :spyder: Schempp Kris. It was my first Spyderco and it was the knife that opened my eyes and turned on the light, if you will. It's truly a work of functional art.

KaliGman, that's good news. I'm really looking forward to seeing the Rock Salt (another Ed Schempp masterpiece, IMHO) in action.

Projek, just my two cents. Work on establishing a positive grip during your practice first, before trying to do speed openings. I personally have not had a problem with the way the kris just leaps into my hand! Seriously, the speed will come once you become more familiar with the knife.

Many times folks want to speed through a process, without foundational skills(Get a Grip on the knife!) and proceed to add speed. You, my fellow forumite are in possession of a great folder. The speed with come with extra handling....... Kaligman, thanks for giving a view of the capabilities of this wonderful folder. ;)

Cutting

#12

Post by Ed Schempp »

Thanks for the kind comments on the Kris. This knife is a unique cutting tool. Think of its cutting action in terms of a double recurve. Being that the knife is not serrated it does not have that immediate grippy purchase of a serrated blade. It does generate variable pressure during a cut.

As the designer most all the models-prototypes I built were too expensive for me to carry. I carried the Spyderco Kris for about a year after its release. The Kris style blade does present some cutting advantages on certain tasks. For me the knife shined sharpening pencils, cutting hose and trimming sucker branches from my trees.

Out of curiosity what have you folks found that this knife will do well?

Take Care...Ed

the kris is a tad heavier than I generally prefer to edc, but I have used it extensively in a couple of backpacking trips and it worked fantastic through all the chores, from food prep to carving some trekking poles

this thread needs some pics w/ the kris in action - unfortunately I have only one involving a display case... :(

I too Have a Kris that I received as a Gift from a Great friend. It is my most treasured Spyderco, and perhaps my most treasured knife period. It took some time for me to be comfortable carrying as an EDC as it is so dang gorgeous. It was baby steps, at first I carried it around my house(kind of like breaking in a pair of new shoes.) I regularly EDC this knife now. It Also fills my hand and can be used as one **** of a perfect impact tool, Just like on KaliGmans videos. I tend to get the knives that are proven by experts. I also have a Lava that I got at the recommendation of KaliGMan. I totally agree with everyone here...If you dont have a Kris, Drop everything and get one before they are all gone. Ed Schemmps Designs are amazing, and I plan on getting more of them!!!

Update...it arrived yesterday and WOW!! What a fantastic knife! I've been carrying around my little Mini Persian all week in anticipation of my second Schempp model and the Kris is every bit as nice as the little Persian. The way it fits the hand is truly amazing and feels comfortable in any grip, just at Stonyman reported. The Kris-shaped blade is a thing of beauty on it's own and coupled with the stainless bolster and black micarta handle, this knife is one gorgeous piece. What else can I say...just another beautiful, classy, functional and wickedly sharp product from Spyderco. I anticipate this one seeing ALOT of pocket time!

Oh, and thanks Mr. Schempp for another great design! Now if only I could get my hands on a big Persian... :)
