Hi, am 100% new here. (You might know me, am MCM on several forums)
My question is what to get. Normally what I decide on is hard to find, out of production, and 2-3x its original cost. So I am OK with that.
Collect MT's & BM's, just starting out here and want to start on top and work down.

Here is what I am after for my 2nd Spyderco (Have a Ronin in the mail)
--------------------------------------------------------------
R hand folder

3 3/4" - 4" non coated / plain blade.

Top shelf SS blade steel. (Not familiar with this co. yet. But favor ATS34,
154cm, S30v, BG42, etc.)

G-10 or CF scales

Tip up carry

Solid machined Mech, solid lock up, zero blade play.
---------------------------------------------------------------

Again, I am 100% new to Spyderco. A little /lot of help would be appreciated.
This will possibly be a "Military" model?

I looked through the photos section, and am not up to speed with the abbreviations yet. Looked a bit at the 2008 catalog and didn't see it. Might have just missed it?

Thanks in advance!

It would be the Military, except for the tip-up carry. The Millie is tip down only. The Military has been made with 440V (a.k.a. S60V), ATS-34, S30V, CPM D2, BG-42 and S90V. You know you are dealing with premium steels when S30V is the low end of the bunch. ;) . Peel-ply carbon fiber has been used in three Sprint runs, with S30V, BG-42 and S90V blade steels.

Welcome to the forum!

You might take a look at the G-10 Endura. 3 3/4" flat ground VG-10 blade, mid-back lock, four way clip option.
I don't believe in safe queens, only in pre-need replacements.

MCM: First welcome to the forum, second take your time in finding what you want. Some people like small, med. or large knifes or all of the above(like me) :D you will get many people that will sugest this or that is better but in reality you have to do your reaserch on that particlular knife that you want and make your own decision because you may be taking a secound mortgage out after all this is over

Thanks!
Looked again at the catalog, searched under G-10 & CF.

You nailed it. Military, Police and Endura look like what most fits my list.
Is the endura the only tip up carry 3 3/4"-4" Spyde?
Have lots of folders and know what works best for me.
Not saying anything against any other model.
I just know what I like. How many different locks does Spyderco use?
Have seen liner locks, & back locks.

There is a knife here, 26 pic's down marked CPM.

http://www.spyderco.com/forums/showthread.php?t=29171

Is this the std construction for G-10 Spyderco's?
Looks very solid. More info? Maybe I will need to drop down to 3 1/2"-4"
to widen the range. Is there a model that is considered a grail knife in my spec's? Closer tolerances, better materials etc?
Again, excuse my ignorance. Ask me anything about Microtechs......
I know zero about Spyderco's.

(Henery, I drive a 1995 truck, could easilly buy a brand new one with cash if I sold my folders. No chance of that) Lets just say, I have been at this for a long time.......

as far as the enduras go only the latest generation (4th) has come in G10 handles. The first and third was FRN, the second SS handles and the fourth has had SS, FRN or G10. check out Ted's site and see what sparks your interest and welcome to the forum. is the R the original, with the cutouts in the blade itself..if so congrats.

Hi MCM!

Welcome to the forums! If I'm not mistaken, the knife on the 26th pic in the mentioned thread is a Para-military. It is highly praised by fellow Spyder-fans. S30V steel, compression lock, thin but solid, made in the USA. It is often suggested by those who know :) I have one in the mail, can't wait for its arrival next week!

Check out the "tanks" too such as the Superhawk, Chinook III and FG Manix.
I prefer to ask for forgiveness rather than permission.

Is that a nick name? Tanks? Does it have to do with the Bushing design?

Found these two links showing the Para (I think)

http://spyderco.com/forums/showthread.p ... ramilitary

http://raum.10gbfreehost.com/

Wire is tip-up, clip tip down. Looks like folks move clips on these. (Just like I do)

Can anyone post pic's, spec's etc.

More questions than answers....... :)

I guess I should just ask for the hardest to find model, that will probably be the one I will be after. LOL LOL

The Para comes standard tip-down with a normal clip. The wire clip is a custom mod, you can read about it here:
http://www.spyderco.com/forums/showthread.php?t=33896

There are tons of Para threads on this site, browse them and feel the addiction growing on you :D
http://www.spyderco.com/forums/showthread.php?t=34325
http://www.spyderco.com/forums/showthread.php?t=34258
http://www.spyderco.com/forums/showthread.php?t=32228
http://www.spyderco.com/forums/showthread.php?t=34100

Fortunately, the Para is still in production so it is not hard to find at all :) Let us wait for the more knowledgeable forumites to join here and let you know all about the extremely hard to find spydie gems!

As fun as it is for me to be new here, its just as nauseating to the local xperts.

Thanks for not just saying "search is your friend"
Once I know what to search for, I will be all over it!
Have been on some knife forums close to 10 years.
So let me just say, Thank you! for taking the time.

With pleasure! :) Actually, looking up the threads served as a fine excuse for re-reading them - makes the wait for my Para a touch easier :D

You might want to check out some pics threads on the Para as well. Some guys and gals here make truly amazings photos:

"Military" was the first thing that popped into my mind, but have you considered the new G10-handled version of the Police model? Seems to meet many of the criteria you have outlined.
