Post by jugg2 »

Hi guys, I was wondering if anyone has had much experrience with karambits.

I have been eyeing the emerson combat karambit, and also one of the 5.11 karambits. I have heard really good theings about both, but what are yall's experiences?

There are many custom folding, as well as fixed blade (both custom and production) karambits. Of the two you have mentioned, I vastly prefer the Emerson, which is, in my opinion, the best production folding karambit currently produced. The 511s I have found, in my personal experience, to vary in production quality from very good to downright poor. I believe that they may have that under control by now (I saw the early production runs), but I would still go with the Emerson. The ergonomics on the Emerson are superb, and I far prefer its handling qualities to any other current production karambit. In addition, Emerson has outstanding customer service. The wave feature is a nice addition, and the nub of the wave can be a striking and pressing surface for use when the knife is closed and an impact weapon may be necessary (I like to hook it on the carotid artery for a "wave choke out".)

You may also want to scare up one of the discontinued Spyderco karambits before they become hard to acquire. The frame locks on these are very sturdy, and they are well worth having in your collection. I used one of mine when filming these:

I wish the hole on the emerson was a bit bigger for my fingers. I cannot knock the ease into action with the EK. Some do not like the Spyderco karambit, but that has to be one of the most versatile folding karambits around. That is a fist full of Stainless Steel!

I like the Tarani models when Blade-tec was producing them. I have yet to get any of the 511's in my hand. Kalig is a good reference point, pick his brain! ;)

The Emerson Karmabit is hard to beat. The Folding Combat Karmabit feels like it was made for my hand. Highly recommend.

I have the 5.11 versions, I have found that I can disengage the lock if I have a forward hammer grip on the knife. However YMMV... It may just be the size of my hand.
