Walmart and the Native

Wal-Mart is phasing out their best knife deal. You can't get the Spyderco Native online at walmart.com any more and from reports it is fast disappearing from the few Wal-Mart stores that carried it. What Happened!!!!.....Doc

I was wondering the same thing. This rumor has been all over the various knife forums. Looks like I'm going to have to go and check out the local Wal-Marts tomorrow and see if they have any left.

This smells of Tenacious or Native IV ???

Which one, if any, do you guys reckon WalMart will be selling under the Spyderco banner ? No WalMarts here in Oz, but if there was I'd put a bet each way on the Tenacious... great value for a Spyderco brand. Else I would say the Byrd line making its debut there.

AFAIK, in the Wal-mart heirarchy, walmart.com is just another store. Their decision to carry, or not carry, a particular item has no wider significance. Fact is, when Wal-mart first started carrying the Native, the only Spydercos available for the longest time from walmart.com were Delicas, which they still carry. They also appear to be selling the Tenacious, Centofante III, Dragonfly, and several of the Byrds. Plus, "out of stock online" may very well mean "temporarily", rather than "no longer carried".

Down near the bottom on the main page you can read "about walmart. com". They know that online retail sales is a big money maker that continues to grow every year. Also not everybody has a walmart within 5 miles of their home/work. My question is about the Delica 4" (4" handle) with Delica III pictures and info? And are they really still selling new or old stock Delica II stainless handles? Or is the info and pictures just old?

Wla-Mart said that they were reducing the size of the knife board and the Native was not as big a seller as the others on the board so it was dropped.

Hey Sal. Well, that explains it.

Any plans for Wal-Mart to carry a different model Spydie? :)

Most of the Wal Marts here have gotten rid of the knife case and the guns. Most of the time no employees are even in the sporting goods dept.
The only knives they have are very cheap ones hanging on a shelf.
There is 2 more reasons for me not to go in a Wal Mart.
I told one of the managers that it was a mistake when I first saw his store did not have guns or knives.I said sense they did not have anything for me to look at while the wife shopped I would be finding her to hurry her up to leave instead of eyeing the few cool things they used to have thus lowering their sales they may make to her.
Right now if the wife wants just to go to Wal Mart or Target to look around I will not go,maybe Target for a very little while because they do have a few clothes I will and can wear and a few cool lights.
If you think about it every other big store took a nose dive when they got rid of their sporting goods dept. Target,Kmart,Service merchadise,Sears somewhat but they still had tools to keep the men looking, now hopefully Wal Mart.Maybe this will be the thing to knock Wal Mart down a few notches. In short a store must keep the men busy so they can keep the women in the store longer.

So when do you think Wal-mart is going to start showing porn movies?

They are trying to keep you out and get your wife in there unsupervised. They know how most men and women shop, and they know they can make more money off women, and even more if there isn't a man along trying to hurry her out. If there is nothing for the man to do, he stays home and she gets to take her time to load the cart with crap.
I don't believe in safe queens, only in pre-need replacements.

Wal-Mart, has and is trying to appeal to more of its urban and suburban base. Sporting goods used to be a big part of the picture, now they are not.

Well, Wal-Marts' loss.

People who buy knives at Wal-Mart want a $5 knife anyway.

We will continue to make the USA Native (S30V) until the Native4 is proved design-wise, and then we'll tool up for a USA made FRN version of the 4.

I was more worried that Walmart sales was keeping the Native I in production, but good to hear Sal say that it will remain in production.

My new Native I PE I got last week has displaced my Para from my pocket! I "get" the Native now. It's one of the most aesthetically pleasing and ergonomic knives I've ever had, and for it's price it's a true bargain! Unlike most other Spydies, it even looks good both open AND closed :D
