Speechless...

#1

Post by rrpalma »

Just wanted to share w you, that for Father's day, my 2 daughters (ages 7 & 2) surprised me with a S90V Military, bought partially from their summer money. I also got a D2 Para from my wife!!! Just speechless ...

What a pair of beautiful knives, and I'd dare say that the F&F on the S90V is better than on my BG42...

3 quick questions for you:
1. Would you EDC them? If my daughters don't see me using them, they might think I didn't like the presents, but OTH, carrying such an expensive and limited production Spydie...
2. Anybody carry their knives not on their pockets, but IWB, like clipped between your pants and shirt?
3. The D2 Para came in a protective plastic bag, inside the usual box, plus a note stating that the bag is for protecting the blade from rust. Is CPM D2 *THAT* prone to rust?? Never had that problem on my D2 Mini Griptillians

Thanks for you comments!

Hi rrpalma - Sounds like you are a lucky man, the knives are great too ;)
1.) I would carry them. The are valuable but they are more fun to use, than to look at. (my$0.02)
2.) Some do. I don't know how it's comfortable, but they do it.
3.) I think D2 is less stainless (or more stain prone?) than some other steels, I think other forumites have had mixed results regarding staining. If you wipe it down after use and keep it clean it will probably be fine.
Enjoy your new knives, and happy Fathers Day! :)

I have a Cuda Maxx and a Bm 710 in the original type of D2 - no rusting problems at all. Just wipe them off after use. I give them no special care, no surface coating or anything... I just don't leave them wet. Many years, no rust.

CPM D2 is different than regular D2 but I think it's roughly the same in terms of corrosion resistance (I'm guessing, really) and I've always felt D2 was a semi-stainless. It's nothing like a carbon blade.

As to using it: absolutely! Otherwise it's a pretty paperweight.

Awesome gifts man. Happy Father's Day to you bro. ;)

1. - I would carry the crap out of them. I would carry the Military more than the Para just for the steel in this particular instance. Knives are made to be used. Especially ones that are gifts from people you love.

2. - I've never carried a knife anywhere other than a pocket. I have carried some of my Spydies just dropped into my pocket instead of clipped. Even large ones like the Military. I have also carried in my back pocket non-clipped. No waist band for me.

3. - I have a CPM-D2 Paramilitary. I've not had any problems at all (yet) with rust on this bad boy. I have used it outside and Ohio is pretty humid and it has not had any surface rust or anything on it at all. About once a week I wipe it down and blow it out with compressed air, and then put some mineral oil on the blade and wipe off the excess. I don't use the knife that much because I don't like the handle color as much as I do the black.

Enjoy your knives sir. Don't let 'em waste away in a box. ;)

The CPM D2 is a tool steel rather than a stainless steel, but the chromium content is very close to classifying as stainless. I suspect the packaging and warning are for those who will whine about that terrible steel if they see a speck of oxidation on their precious knife. I have been carrying my CPM D2 Military for months with no special precautions, and no hint of rust.

I also carry a S90V/CF Military. I use it for a beater - drywall repair, carpet trimming, caulking removal, etc. That baby is made to be USED. I'd say carry it, use it, love it. And let the girls see that you do.

In waistband carry is more comfortable than a lot of people realize with the right knife. This is about the only thing I like stainless handle knives for, especially the Police. G-10 and peel-ply carbon fiber may eat your shirt tail though. Don't say I didn't warn you. ;)
I don't believe in safe queens, only in pre-need replacements.

that is wonderful and congrats.
1) communication is the key, you can always frame it and tell them it's that special.
2) yes I have carried in various places, pants, shirts, bags, belt, even sleeve :D
3) I do not know.

as many have said, CPM D2 is not a stainless steel. Which means it can rust. Yablanowitz, hit it dead on. The only thing I will add is this. It does stain. Say for example you make a sandwich with mustard, or cut a steak, and then dont clean it right away, but let is set (this may take seconds with some mustard :rolleyes :) you may get a kinda light brown discoloration. But in this cause I would simply treat it like you would any other knife steel, but be aware that it can rust and stain. If you have that thought running in your head, you will be just fine.

On the other questions...

Carry them... Gosh darn it carry them. I think your wife and kids would prefer if you carried them as well. Its more fun to see a gift being loved and used. But that could be just me.

Also happy fathers day! :D

Those are some great gifts! Your kids and wife sure knows how to pick them. Man, you have to carry them..............the only disheartening thing would be to not keep them sharp! :D Take care and God Bless!
