Police Model repair?

#1

Post by tren »

I broke off the tip(3/4") of my serrated Police model. Does anyone know if that knife can be rebladed or if there is anything that can be done? I just really hate to just toss it or keep it in a drawer somewhere, just because this thing just loves being used and sometimes abused.

Just smooth out the edges and use it for a Rescue knife.

You could try to reprofile the tip yourself. With 3/4 inch missing I'm not sure the cost of professional repair would be cost effective.

My first serious knife was a Police, I also broke the tip off mine. I believe that you can send it to Spyderco for a new blade, I threw mine out and continue to kick myself for doing that.

As long as it is a (pinned) SS handle, there is no chance for a blade swap by the Spyderco crew. All they can do is smooth out the blade and give the remaining blade a good sharpening.
Most likely, if you will ask them, they will recommend you to retire the knife and buy a new one.

Sometimes, the life of a knife has reached its "natural ending", and after the loss of 3/4'' of the blade, it is a safe bet that this is the case here.

You may want to follow whitefeather's advice.

I'm not sure....

But I think for 20 bucks, Spyderco will regrind your Police to make it better.

Also,

I have had this guy Sharpen my knives in the past, and I think he does Re-Tipping too.... <a href="http://www.bronksknifeworks.com/vcom/in ... Linkage</a>

Thanks for the help gentlemen. I usually do just replace when I have to, but I was just hoping there was another way. I do like the rescue knife idea, I'll get it back to Spyderco and see what they can do.

I was being an idiot and chipping my frozen hamburger apart with it and the tip broke off. Something I had done a couple times a week for almost a year and then one day it decided that was enough and broke. I learned a lesson, knives are for cutting and you should let you hamburger thaw the right way.

You would be surprised how easily a knife breaks when you are using it for a pry bar, hammer, screwdriver, scraper, seatbelt/rope cutter, drug test scoop(evidentary only)...oh yeah and using it to cut stuff(even battery cables). They should really think about making them stronger :D . The stronger part is a joke but seroiusly I will not go on duty without my 2 Harpy's and Police models in various places and a Benchmade HK in one boot and a SW el cheapo SWAT folder in the other boot. Aloha and welcome tren,

My dad is the same way. He USES his knives, so he says. I say it's abuse! :p He was chipping ice with is SS Delica and the tip broke off. I re-profiled it along the lines of the Salt before the Salt was made. ;) It looked cool, and worked fine...

IIRC, he still uses it as his, "sacrificial task knife", and uses his PE Caly' Micarta Jr. for "proper knife uses".

God bless and hope all works out for ya.

My Dad is brutal in his knife uses. I bought him a nice Buck knife a while back, it wasn't a cheap one either, cost me almost $100 and we were visiting them a while back and his knife was sitting on the counter so I took a look. Well it looks like someone sharpened it (if you can call it that) on a bench grinder with a really course wheel (more then likely that is what happened). All the screws in the handle were nearly falling out they were so loose and all the anodizing on the handle was pretty much gone. Also I wouldn't trust the liner lock on the thing at all, it was in pretty rough shape. He is a maintainence guy at a lodge, so the knife gets used as a paint scraper, mini prybar, you name it, just plain abused. :)

Thanks for the Aloha and welcome Daywalker, I have a number of "sacrificial task knives" but I haven't been without a Spyderco of some sort(mostly Harpy's) since 1990. I just want to thank you all again for your help and comiserating. As for Mr. Daywalker and Flyby since you both hung your fathers out to dry maybe you should be getting them a new :spyder: to abuse/use for Fathers Day. :D
