Umh, I think the Native is ground the way it is because people think the hollow looks more intimidating. People buy the Native for it's strength over the Delica

Dialex that pic does it for me. The native is my favourite EDC for travelling and I have always wondered how it would look with a full flat grind - I figured going that way would spoil it's 'primitive' looks. I was wrong, the full flat grind would make it more NKP friendly and perhaps even more functional...

All that remains is for Sal to make it and me to buy it.

As far as improvements to the Native overall goes. I would have a tiny bit less choil and more edge (like the military) and the aforementioned full flat grind. I also prefer the ergos of the Native III and the wire clip.

Sweet dialex. Caly Jr./Native cross-breed. I would just modify the spine notching. I like the Native IIIs ribs better. I will take at least two, thanks.

I have an S30V Native from Walmart which was my first FRN Spyderco and one of my favorite knives. Maybe it's too good already because I wasn't interested in getting any other Spydercos for some time because I didn't see how other models could better fit my needs.

Blade steel, handle shape, dent, choil (best feature), grind, tip-up clip, all good. Changes - Endura 4 type construction and clip, move the lock toward the pivot a little, handle relief for hole access. A flat grind might be interesting, as would a larger model and other handle colors. Keep it at or near the same price point. An upscale G10 version would be a nice addition, but not as a replacement of the FRN.

It was wonderful to be able to walk into any Walmart and buy a nice Spyderco for a great price. I hope we can have this kind of availability again, but understand that Walmart could be difficult to deal with. There aren't any good knife dealers in my town.

I like the FRN. I just got a Byrd Crossbill and I don't seen what the big deal is over G10. I like the swedge just fine too.

The only change I would like is easier access to the hole; the handle does cover up the hole too much.

I too have no problem with the FRN. In fact, I find that it shreds pockets less than G-10. Perhaps I have small thumbs, but I haven't had any problem with the hole being partially covered either. Personally, I wouldn't change a thing on the Native.

I have relatively large hands, so opening the Native is a little cramped for me, but once it's open, it's remarkably comfortable and secure, it's no Dodo, but it's pretty good

I've never really been a fan of the native, due to the cramped opening ergos, but I decided to give it another chance, and it's growing on me, my only real complaint is the cramped opening ergos and the fact that the FRN scales slightly obscure the SpyderHole

I'm thinking that I may end up sending this native to be given the Krein FFG treatment, as I've heard the Native becomes a pocket scalpel when flat-ground

How would I contact Mr. Krein, does he post on the forums here?

Good question MacTech. I've been thinking about having a few knives flat ground myself. However, just wait a couple of more months and Spyderco will be releasing the new Native IV model with the flat ground blade, steel liners, carbon fiber handle, screw construction, etc., etc.. I have a few other models I would like to have flat ground.

I found this on the internet. Not sure if it's current though as the rest of the site is "still under construction".

OTS, the Native 4 sounds interesting, but I'd imagine that with CF scales, the price is going to be rather high, one of the many reasons I like the Native is due to it's affordability, I really don't have the disposable income to be spending $200+ on a knife, especially when I already have more Spydies than I can comfortably use anyway

my absolute-can't-go-any-higher point is $150, unfortunately, that rules out many good Spydies, the Superhawk, the Civvie, the sprint run Manix is borderline, I'm afraid if the N-4 goes CF, it'll be out of my self-imposed limit

thankfully, Spyderco has a wide range of knives and prices, so there are plenty of Spydies I *CAN* comfortably afford.....

I think it's a little flimsy, and uncomfortably sharp where you hold it.
Other than that, 'is all good.
Dem tings be mine:

Can someone please direct me to the picture of someone's mod where the hole was more accessable - I searched, and CAN'T find it. The bit of difficulty opening mine keeps me from using it, and I WANT to use it - once open, it's great. Thank you.

- best wishes, Jazz.

CAUTION:

kz1000s1 brought back this 3 year old thread.

I do agree that the Native I is a great knife. I do think the hole is just too buried in the handle and I prefer the Native III for the handle ergos and the blade grind and also the thumb jimping on top. I also tend to like VG-10 just a little better than S30V too. :)
