OFFICIAL G-10 Lava Thread
G-10
I already own a black and tan G-10 model. A factory model would be nice--I would vote for a textured G-10 handle (quite thin scales) with skeletonized liners, or else a thicker, unlined G-10 handle with texturing. I would really like to see it in coyote brown/dark flat earth, or navy G-10.
While I'm wishing--can I have a new Ferrari F430 too (red please, with the paddle-shift transmission) :D

I'll try a Lava as long as the scales are not SS or aluminum.
I received my Sage today and it is my favorite for now so I want a Taiwan made S30V CF Big Lava really cheap.
Actually I'll buy an FRN/G-10/CF or whatever Lava. The idea of a knife with S like handle is very interesting but probably not a moneymaker for Spyderco. I do not like metal handles but my R2 has excellent grip and control mostly because the handle has more holes than Al+++.
FRN would probably be the the best seller for Spyderco. We could always beg Sal for a special Lava as a forum knife. All the same guts but with different scales just to make us feel special.

Orange or Yellow
Orange or Yellow for the handles would be very fitting for a Knife with the name of "LAVA". I have been on the fence for some time. Love the design.

Mahalo...how about a "swirled FRN mix" of Orange and Yellow? That way, no scales would ever be the same!!!
God bless and thanks again everyone!!!

I just wish we would get some answers from :spyder: . Two big threads about Lava and no answer yet. Like they are waiting for thread to die down and be forgotten. It would be a shame because most if not all requests were valid. I wish they would at least say that we should stop this if nothing is gonna happen. I am surprised how :spyder: is ignoring this/us
. Maybe they are not but I would really like to know how much % are there of Lava g10/frn becoming a reality.
Avatar in support of my favorite designer! CLB rocks!!!!

Hi Spydo,
While forumite input is very imoortant to us, We cannot just spend many thousands of dollars on a new mold without careful consideration.
Our mold budget (FRN requires a mold for production) is over right now with the new H1 models that require both handle molds and sheath molds. Molds for the new Baliyo are also dear.
The interest is certainly noted.
As far as China manufactur goes, that is mostly for the byrd line. If we make any Spyderco knives in China, like the Tenacious, it really has to be a mainstream design as more volume is required. It also had to be a design that we're confident the maker can make to our standards.
We do have a drawing for a Lava with a full sized blade for the handle (2.5") as there is much more room in the handle for a longer blade in the current handle design.
Scales could be G-10, (black, Foliage green, black, Carbon fiber?) liners could be skeletonized.
That combination would offset some of the complaints:
Stainless handle is too slippery
Stainless handle is too heavy
Blade / handle ratio is too far off
However, it would do nothing to make the price lower.
Our maker in Seki that makes the Lava is probably the best in the world. There are few, if any, out there that could produce a higher quality knife. I would prefer not to lower the quality in blade steel, fit or finish, or the long term use that we get from such a high quality piece. There are only a few makers in the world that are good enough to make knives for Spyderco.
Creating new models or refining current or old models is more work and funds than might appear to non knife makers.
Our collaboration designs that are "in-the-works" are many. Choices are difficult. Bob Terzuola, Gayle Bradley, Fred Perrin, Jason Breeden, just to mention a few. That is in addition to designs by Eric and myself for Spyderco and byrd.
Outside designs come in at the rate of 2 - 3 per week.
We sit in meetings and discuss the future designs regularly and it is always a a choice of "either / or", rather than "yes / no".
Also, Eric and I are involved in every design. Maker, Blade steel, handle materials, locks, clip design, engineering details, not to mention ergonomic refinements. Spyderco has a reputation for having very hand friendly ergonomic designs. We get very few outside designs that are "ready" when we receive them. Most are just drawings of any idea. No models, no engineering, a "sketch" if you will. It took us quite a while to fugure out how to put a lock into the Lava.
Painstaking refinement is a necessary process before protos / concept models are made. And then they're refined again after protos / concept models are shown to the market at shows / meets.
I hope that helps with a broader picture of how these decsions are made.

Thanks Sal!
I, like many others, would love an FRN Lava. But mostly that's because I'm not a fan of SS handles, so G10 would work... and the 2.5" blade and I'll get more than one. Thanks also for the peek inside the inner workings of the model selection process. It is obvious you all have a lot of tough either/or decisions to make, and I'm grateful for your dedication to the best.

Thanks Sal! I had no doubt our voices were being heard. But, to actually hear it coming from you is awesome! Glad to hear that at least a concept of the Lava is being considered. 2.5" blade, G-10, same overall size...count me in!
So are we talking 1 year, 2 years...how long shall we keep this thread going?? :D
By the way, since I see you are reading this thread...How about a G-10 Cricket!!! :D

Sprint run would be good...and no...I want one in FRN! :p I have always had a love for the Volcano pattern and FRN. Add to that SE, and it reminds me of the "good ol' Spyderco Days"! :D However...
God bless you guys and take care!
Most certainly G10. However, I will settle for black FRN with no trouble at all :)
