In the first photo (from the side), I like the look of the handle, but the filework all along the blade is a bit much IMO. Then in the other pics the handle looks very thick which I am not a fan of. And also, the rest of the filework is not great looking. All in all, I'd say it is indeed FUGLY!
PS. Anyone got a pic of the skull cricket? I know it's supposed to be horrendous. I have asked before and this is the response I got:

Even after being told this, every time I hear about the infamous "skull cricket" I'm more intrigued to see it just to see what all the fuss is about. It would be better to stab yourself in the eyes with a fork than open a link to the skull Cricket. It looked like a rat skull with the Cricket blade replacing the two front teeth.

Im sorry to whoever made it, good idea, bad execution. It looks to me that the handle is wider than it is tall. And I think it was already a lockback before he worked on it, meaning he didn't make it into one. I think the filework would be pretty sick if it didn't disrupt the profile of the blade or spine. If he took off the scales then filed a pattern onto the spacer in the back and maybe the lock button itself then put the scales back on it would add some grip to the knife (it doesn't come with jimping) and add some flair. I think filing on the top of the blade would look a little strange, especially because it changes the blade profile. There's my 2 cents!

p.s. does somebody want to show me this infamous hideous cricket?!

I thought that I would grant you your request, and let you see the Skull Cricket, but I couldn't find it when I tried, as all the links had expired (to my eternal gratitude :p ). Believe me, you're better off. :D

Holy crap!!!
Absolutely that goes in the FUGLY file!!!
I love custom-modded blades. But that is horrible.

Although it's not my cup of tea, I kinda wanna cut the guy a little slack, in the description he sounds very proud of his work. I believe modding knives is a trial and error process and who knows, his next project might not turn out as bad. I would find it very hard to believe that everyone who has modded a knife had an absolute pristine masterpiece after their first try. Again, I think it's ugly, but I give the guy a point for trying.

The last time I saw it, I reformatted my hard drive to make sure I had eliminated all traces of it.
Just kidding, but I did purge my IE temp files to make sure it was gone. I didn't want anything that ugly laying around the harddrive. Besides, the seller who had it listed also listed at least one stolen-by-scam custom knife as well. After that came to light, I really didn't want anything to do with it.

I don't believe in safe queens, only in pre-need replacements.

Hey Jay,Jay_Ev wrote:I have seen the 'skull' Cricket to which everyone is referring, but at the time I didn't save the pic, so if anyone has it, can we see it?

I saw it when it was listed over & over on ebay. I didnt save the image though the artists name is JEAN MARC LAROCHE. He has another custom Spydie on ebay right now he had shut down his personal web-site stating he was having problems with people copying his works or photos or something.
He is an auction with one of Jeans new custom Spydies click it "The Alien"
wow thats a heck of a pocket knife & then here is his web-site Old & also New
oh yea here is "The Rat" $1299.99 another Spydie under the covers
His stuff is unusual to say the least & the Alien knife is is only $999.99 thats a bargin.

Wow! Those are the craziest handles I've ever seen. Who would ever carry the rat?
The Harpy almost seems to be a practice run at a custom piece. Just trying to make money on it. It seems a little much.
If it was a well thought out piece, then my apologies to the modder.

I've been told by a fine art painter I know that the hardest lesson to learn when creating "art" is restraint. Knowing when to quit working on a piece is something that takes time to learn. I think the Harpy guy still has to learn this lesson, but at least he gave it a try.
As for the Rat and Alien models, the seller did buy then from the original owner, just before his family had him committed.
BTW I think that the Alien is Riley Martins EDC:

After enlightenment, the laundry.
Well what to say!
Are they all based round Aliens as he is from another planet price wise?
I thought it was a wind up at first the rat is the alien with a different head?
The ugly one at $1.30 he must rate he has a reserve on it, on the other hand he must have some taste as he does use spydies as the "platform" for his work. :)
I think I will stick to my FRN Alien. :D
Ironically I was just looking at the NASA knife. (twighlight Zone music starts) :)

*ack* Tony
those uneven bolsters (relative to the scales) and spine "work" all the way to the tip are "priceless"
and I can't say those Laroche-pimped spydies get my juices flowing either...but that Alien stuff is kinda  though kinda pricey
but this Harpy still can't hold a candle to "a.j.'s crown jewel" .... :p
