Combination Edge?

Spyderco is looking to make room for new models. Do you think reducing, or even eliminating, CE versions would be a good idea?

I can't stand combo edge knives.

I don't own one and I will not buy one. I will not buy a knife if it is the only kind if it only comes in CE. I either want full SE or full PE.

They should get rid of CE in my opinion but I'm sure a lot of NKP like 'em.

I do not like CE, but if Spyderco makes them, most likely it is mean they sell them, so no reason to change.

I don't mind the CE on 4+ " blades, I have a CE endura that I am very partial too. Since there wasn't a choice for only on blades 4+"'s I voted to leave things the way they are. It's a nice way for non knife people to try both as well without having to buy more than one knife. They later it will entice them to buy more.

Personally, it would not bother me one whit if they discontinued CE and SE compeltely and only made PE. From a more realistic point of view, am sure that would hurt the sales of at least a couple models where SE does seem to be the most popular edge type.

I used to feel like David, but lately I have been more accepting of CE's.
I actually went out of my way to buy the CE Tenacious (in addition to PE).
My guess is that on most models were it is not natural (for lack of a better word) for a fully serrated (Hawkbill, Rescues), CE's outsell a fully serrated version by a pretty good margin. B & M owners I talked to have said the same thing.

It is not widely known that Goldilocks found the knife with a CE to be just right and she carries one to this day. This was in the first draft of the story but the publisher demanded that the author remove it because they deemed it "too controversial". The knife was used before eating the porridge and again before going to bed. It was also used after the three bears came back home. It was this last use of the knife that the publisher had concern with. We will never know exactly how it was used or if she had the knife with her when she went into the house or if she found it inside the house. But it is likely that the story never would have been told if she had not had that CE in her pocket when she went to bed on that day long ago. Full Quote from Goldilocks: "CE, It's just right". Quote from Martha Stewart: CE, It's a good thing".

I have no interest in CE. For those few selected applications, I want the full-length cutting power of SE, for everything else I prefer PE. CE is neither fish nor flesh. As always only my $0.02.

A while back, I bought myself a combo edge blade (a D4) to see if I would like it or not. I don't totally dislike CE blades, I just prefer fully serrated or fully plain edge blades. So it wouldn't affect me if there were no more CE blades.

the proublem with collecters

#13

Post by ClockWork »

dont forget....

I know allot of ya'all are collecters. You buy 4 of each SKU, and never use them.

You own a PE, SE, in every knife, with every variation of handle material.
You can choose to carry a Plain edge. OR choose to carry a Full serrated.

Most people don't have this luxury.
Heck... Its hard for allot of us to even BUY / FIND the good knives we want (dodo's, Yo's, ATR's, LilTemps) Because the Collectors snatch up every one, and have 5-10-15 of the exact same model...

The collectors can afford to pick and choose. However; most people only own 1 ... MAYBE 2 knives. And a CE is the wiser purchase for them.

DO NOT DO AWAY WITH CE

I personally wouldn't have a problem if there were no CE blades, as I am not a fan of them at all. I think it would hurt sales though, as I know lots of NKP that like CE blades because they find it more useful. That being said, they don't know what a sharp knife is, or how to sharpen their knives, so they find the CE best for cutting rope and such. And this is true. A dull Serrated blade will out cut a dull PE blade due to the points and jagged-ness of it. It almost makes sense then that NKPs should get full SE blades, but this isn't so. They seem to think that a full SE blade is a bread knife or a saw as opposed to a knife.

*When I say NKPs, I am referring to the many that I have talked to. I can't speak for all of them*

Most of my knives are PE, with preference given to SE for certain models (hawkbills, the Dodo :D :spyder: ) My ideal EDC combo is a 3.25-4" PE primary folder, with a 2.5-3" SE secondary folder. That will get pretty much anything done.

I don't entirely dislike the CE, it just works better on larger knives IMHO. If something like a Delica is CE, it seems like there isn't enough of either edge type to perform optimally. I might pick a CE Endura or Military if I could only have one knife, but why limit yourself if you don't have too. :spyder:

That's a tough one... my first real knife was a CE Delica 4, but I ended up trading it for a PE D4, because I found I rarely used the serrated portion, which I felt cost me too much (nearly half!) of the "useful" part of the blade. But now I find myself thinking about adding maybe three serrations (about a half inch) to my PE D4, for the occasion when I would need a bit of serration, but still leaving myself a long enough plain edge to be useful. Plus, I kinda miss the look of them teeth!!! :spyder: :D :spyder: :D :spyder:

I wouldn't mind if they did away with it entirely, but I can see where some people like that edge. I would rather have full SE or full PE. I'm a PE guy myself, too lazy to sharpen a SE lol. :D

CE Rocks

Post by gk911 »

We'll despite being in the minority, I'm a huge CE fan. I do have some PE and SE, but since I only EDC one knife, I always choose a CE. For some strange reason I actually like to cut open envelopes and packages, not shred them. Yet there are times the SE is needed, such as cutting rope ot twine.

Diversity is a good thing! Please add more CE, personally I'm hoping for a CE para...(Hint).

I would think most folks who spend much time outdoors can appreciate the Combination Edge.

The plain edge is there for sharpening tent stakes, removing splinters, trimming torn cuticles, or taking a slice off that apple... while the serrated edge works great for quickly cutting through rope, bailing twine, nylon ties, etc.

When field dressing game, the plain portion is right where you want it for slicing meat, while the serrated portion is right where you want it for ripping through hide, joints, etc.

I wonder if Sal maybe knew what he was doing when he included CE in the Spydie line-up....
