Foliage Green, Wire Clips, and other things...

#1

Post by Fred Sanford »

I've been a bit harsh on my feelings of wire clips and also foliage green G10. So I'd like to say a few things on how I feel about them now.

First off I've been carrying my foliage green UKPK for about a week now and I just love it. I was a bit turned off when I got it because the clip was sitting off of the knife about 1/8" or more. You could slide about 5 sheets of paper between the knife and the clip. There was not anything at all wrong with the knife other than the clip that looked like it had been streched away from the knife. Just today I still wasn't satisfied with the wire clip so I removed the clip and took a pair of pliers and bent it a little to make it a little tighter. Afterwards I put it back on and now it's been great. There's hardly any movement on the clip now. It's lovely. I love the wire clip on the Native III so why not also love the one on the Caly 3 and the UKPK? Well, I do now. :)

I've also been "complaining" a bit much about foliage green G10 scales. This last week or so with my foliage green UKPK has made the foliage green really grow on me. It's not the standard black and green is my favorite color so I don't mind the shade too much. In fact I'm about to buy a Honda Accord in a very similar color of green. Maybe... :)

So please forgive my rash judgements on foliage green and the wire clips. I do change my mind quite a bit and I do really love both of these items now very much. Sometimes it just takes me a little longer to warm up to things. ;)

So.....thanks for reading.

I think that's how it goes - it's accually nice when you all of a sudden begin to appreciate something you didn't. :)

- best wishes, Jazz.

Just got a UKPK; my first wire-clip, and I prefer it to the "regular" clips. What is it about wire-clips people dislike?

Wire clips ! did someone say wire clips ?

I have loved them ever since I got my Native III a while back. Been a fan of them and wherever I see a wire clip I have to ask myself....why haven't I got that knife with that wire clip yet ???

Some dislike it thinking they won't hold onto your garments. I would assure them that if they haven't tried it then they shouldn't knock it. David is correct though, sometimes the QA is not so good and there is a bit of 'play' or looseness in the clip. A quick fix of re-bending is sometimes all that is required.

Glad you have rediscovered the wireclip David. Maybe this should go in the 'surprise discovery' thread as well :)

i've found that sometimes, the wire clip on the d'allara doesn't perform as well as i wish... but otherwise, it's a really great feature that needs to be used to be appreciated.

as far as foliage green goes... i love it. anything non-black rocks my world!!! :D

Ya know, sometimes a little "tweaking" is needed, no matter what the product, who made it, or how good it is. You can either hate it or do something about it. You chose to be proactive and do something about it, and like, WOW, it's now cool! Sometimes that's all it takes. Congratulations on your achievement! :)

Glad to see that you're warming up to the FG, David. Black gets old for me quick, I like seeing all these colored spydies. :)

Well, as you all know... I love wire clips... thats why I put the on everything. I think I am going to make myself a new money clip out of four spyderco wireclips. Or maybe an entire knife handle made with wire clips... :D

Ok but I do like them. Glad they are growing on you David. Like anything they have some flaws. Some of which I dont like, but do blend into jeans and most pants really nicely. As of yet I havent broken one or bent one seriously...

I for sure like any new color of G-10... Im not a huge fan of the new Orange. But I am really getting tired of black, just to bla for my tastes. I like blending in, but I also like character.

Glad you warmed up to it David. I think everyone can empathize with your original impressions of the knife. I had gripes about the Caly JR when I first got it, but now I love it.
Sometimes it takes some using/carrying of a knife to realize how much design time and thought went into that model.

I'm getting more used to the color, but I'm still not a big fan. If I want the Rock Lobster, I may have to bite the bullet.

Does Forest Green have a particular purpose? Was it designed to go with cammies, or to look less threatening than black, or what?

:spyder: It's sheeple friendly and blends in with more hues than black without atracting undue attention. Plus it's pretty in it's own right! :spyder:

It supposedly has the ability to blend with different backgrounds by "shifting" colors from gray to green to even blue-ish. An added benefit is that it is less threatening than black.

Just a little bump to let people know that I'm pretty much getting insane addicted to foliage green. I never in my life thought it would happen. I'm just really likeing it. I look in my "pile-O-knives" to choose which one to carry for the week and I end up carrying more foliage green knives than anything else.

So, more foot in mouth from a guy who changes his mind a lot and from a guy that takes a while to warm up to certain knives. ;)
