FFG...who would I go to?

#1

Post by sarguy »

I've seen people mention how much they love their full flat ground blades. I'm gathering that the knife is much, much sharper after doing so. After searching the forum for a bit I'm not finding too much in the way of answers for myspecific questions:

How much does this weaken the blade of, say, a E4W or D4W? Does this reduce it's strength enough to rule out its use as a defense blade?

That aside, I've looked and I'm not finding much in the way of a reputable knife-mod guy in my area. Is there someone who does great send-in work?

Thanks all!

Cool, thanks! I looked at his website but it seems to be in the early stages. What does a FFG job usually run, and how long does it take?

Contact Tom and make sure to tell him what knife though eh. There are some knives he will not do. The price varies as well depending on the knife
He also can buy the knife straight from his dealer and ffg it and send it to you.

This saves a whole lot of time and the shipping costs for you.

TOM is really the best in the business concerning regrinds.

You really need to ask him that. When I had my ZDP Endura done last year, he was charging $35 for the regrind plus $7 for shipping. Turn around was under a month. A lot can change in a year.

There are some yojimbo listed at knives australia eh. But a tad expensive.

I just received today a ZDP Delica from Tom.

It was absolutely incredible! Tom is an outstanding gentlemen, and a superb knifemaker. You won't be disappointed.

Tom FFG'd my ZDP Endura. He was a pleasure to deal with. VERY good customer service. Oh, his work is simply top-shelf, too!

Bottom line: send your D4W to Tom.

That's really nice, rs2! Looks just like my Krein'd Endura, but smaller! :p Did you specify a certain edge thickness?

Thanks Steve. This was one that Tom had already made and offered for sale, rather than having been my knife to begin with.

I don't know what the thickness is.
