Dodo clip trouble

#1

Post by Tungsten »

Hi,

I had some problems with my Dodo's ball lock (ball didn't engage fully sometimes) so although I really loved the shape, I didn't use it for over 2 years.

Now I wanted to give it another try, but I just can't figure out how to attach the wire clip. When I insert the clip in the recess, the screw doesn't reach the nut.

I know for sure the clip was on the knife when I bought it, the knife looks absolutely ok, but the screw is just a few millimeters too short. I even tried another set of screw/nut/spacer (Spyderco was kind enough to send another complete set of screws after the axle stripped), same result.

I'm quite puzzled. Anyone knows what I'm doing wrong?

Try turning the bolt around so you are putting the clip under the other end. It has been a long time, but I seem to recall when I changed mine from right to left I had to reverse the bolt as well.

Thanks for your reply!

I just tried it, no success. Strange, I'm absolutely sure the clip was installed when I got it.

Are you *certain* you're using the correct parts?

Yeah, absolutely. I have all the parts twice (identical), as Spyderco sent me the spares for my damaged axle screw. "all manners of Dodo screws" is written on the plastic bag I got from Spyderco.

Can you post a picture of the clip area?

I suspect you only think you have tightened it all the way down and that its just hit a stick point because of some loctite or other gunk down inside the barrel. I'd be very careful about muscling it trying to force it but you may be able to find out by using two torx drivers, one on each side.

Yeah, I tried to take pictures of the things that may be important in this case.

Recess

Spacer installed, nut completely seated

Same as above, but clip placed under the nut. Again, completely seated (sorry for the blur, long exposure and I had to tilt the knife by hand)

Thanks, I'll have to try that. If only I could find my second T8...

I have a black Dodo here (on loan to me) and the screw is quite a bit longer than the one you show there, about 2mm longer. Also, it uses a T10.

The female part of the clip assembly is about flush with the counter sink on mine.

So i suspect the problem is that the one you're using for some reason or other is not long enough, perhaps it's a combination of that and the male screw not being long enough to compensate for the shorter female part.

The screw in Tungsten's picture looks like one of the T9 ones to me(?)

One of the Pan head T10 screws that came on my first Dodo sheared. Specifically asked for a replacement Dodo screw and got a dome headed T9.

Since earlier Yojimbos seems to have the same T10 screw, and later ones the T9 version i'm inclined to think this was a deliberate change somewhere along the line.

Hi guys,

thanks for your comments, good to know that there is something wrong with the screws I have, it was driving me nuts.

I'll have to check the screws again, but the T8 was fitting perfectly if I remember correctly.

Because I have two complete sets of screws, it's unlikely that I'm using parts that doesn't belong to the knife, I have every part twice except for the stripped axle screw. The corresponding parts are identical.

Here's what I have:

Clip screw, female part, both T8/T9, spacers
Four screws for the scales, T6
Axle (one side flat), axle screw, T10

I guess I'll have to write to Golden and ask if they could send me a longer screw for the clip.

Yeah, I was just saying, the one I have is a T10, FWIW. I'm not sure I'd read anything into that, other than the screw is different than the one on Tungsten's Dodo.

It seemed to me that Charlynn from the service was a bit skeptical regarding the origin of the screws, but I got them twice from Sypderco, on the knife and in the mysterious bag. She said that there's only one screw set for this knife, and it obviously not the one I got.

The head on the clip screw of Dodos I see on the net seems different from mine. My Dodo was bought December 2004, I got the screws in January 2005.

Charlynn will send me the screws I need. I hope I don't get the same "all manners of Dodo screws" again. :D
