Caly 3 Problem (!)

#1

Post by twca »

Out of the blue, my Caly 3 now grinds against the right-hand liner upon opening. The blade doesn't look off center when closed. The grinding is so bad that the knife almost binds shut if I try to open it quickly, which is extremely worrisome for any kind of emergency situation.

Has anyone else experienced this? I've tried relaxing and then re-adjusting the tension on the pivot but the problem's still there.

Any fix other than :spyder: warranty service would be great to hear about if this is a known problem.

Sorry to hear that!

Hmmmm... sounds like something's stuck between the blade and the liners. A grain of sand would be more than enough to cause that behaviour.

Since the Caly3 doesn't have washers being a PITA when reasssembling a knife, I personally would take out the blade completely and clean the pivot aera of the handle thoroughly with soap, water and a toothbrush and clean the blade itself as well, dry and oil it and put it together again.

It might be sufficient to solve that problem completely since it doesn't sound like something's bent or broken, when it came "out of the blue".

Mind you, that's what I would do.

Good points and I thought this, except that I can actually see where the liner and blade are being scored by mutual contact and it's past what I think some trapped particles would create. It seems like actual metal-on-metal contact -- which, yes, is really, really strange for sudden "out of the blue" appearance.

The fact that the blade binds almost totally upon some openings is really worrisome, clearly going to have to drop this from my EDC rotation until it's fixed ... :(

I was wondering if you had adjusted the pivot, or taken the frame screws off at all? Joe

Yes, I adjusted the pivot when I got the knife two months ago, to increase the level of tension on the blade (so it could only be opened with a very deliberate motion). This was fine since, until this morning when I went to open the knife, and out of the blue the blade got halfway open and snagged the liner.

Never dropped it either.

In that case the most reasonable course of action would be to return it to Spyderco for service.

If the "disassembling and cleaning" method doesn't work, I think it would be best to send it to Spyderco right away and have them take a look at it. I'm sure they can fix it.
It would be a shame to retire the knife because of that problem, especially if the repair team in Golden could fix it in a few minutes (which I'm sure they can!)

Still, I'd give the disassembling apprach a try first

I was hesitant to get too far into the taking apart and cleaning ritual due to the warranty policies of Some Other Manufacturers that I've perhaps grown too used to ... maybe worth a shot if I can still send it in to :spyder: , should it not work.

I would e-mail customer service, then follow their advice for shipping it in. I recently returned a D4 and they were very quick, and very helpful with my problem. I am sure they will do right by you. Let us know how it goes.

Sounds like my right knee. :o

I'm forced to keep it as EDC for now, though.

You could give it a real thorough cleaning by loosening the pivot a fair bit, blowing the pivot out with canned air, spraying the bejezus out of the pivot with WD-40, allowing it to dry and then lubing. If that doesn't work, call CS.
