Remote Release

Post by FLYcrash »

I don't see much about the Remote Release around here; I didn't even recognize it when I saw it in the New Graham catalog!

Anyone have experience with this knife? If so, how do you like it?

I've never had one, but it's been around for quite awhile. I believe that the current one is a "second generation". It fills a niche market for those who need to have a knife readily at hand and clipped.

Did you try running a Spyderco Forum search? I turned up 244 threads searching the term "remote release". Give it a try.

I have the first Gen version. I dont use it very much. I keep mine clipped in my backpack. It's always there if I need it.

i have 2 of the first version, one with a black clip, one with a red one. i had one of them clipped to the outside of my firecoat for awhile but after a couple of weeks and a few fires it was starting to rust pretty badly so that one has been retired to my backback. the first ones were right friendly only, the 2nd generation (two different models really the clipit and the snapit IIRC) has the clip out of the way of opening the blade.

Yeah, I did...and every recent thread I got only mentioned it in passing. There was little to no substantial discussion that I could find.

FWIW, Deacon's noted the same absence of discussion:

Good point, though; a lot of dead horses get beaten around here.

I have one with a VG-10 SE blade. The Remote Release has carabiner style clip on the butt of the handle (Spyderco calls it a spring loaded shackle clip). The clip is opened by pushing a button (right beside the mid-lock) forward with the thumb.

It's a handy knife for backpacking, etc. where it can be clipped to the outside of your gear and is easily accessible. Comfortable handle shape, short stout blade (think of a short ATR shape blade), light weight. It has a nested liner on the clip release side which adds to the strength of the handle.

I think it has a great niche, external carry on your outdoor gear, but in most situations, it's not a great EDC since it's not really suited to pocket carry.

Hope this helps!

I have one Snap-It and two Remote Releases (one old and one new). If you backpack, it is a GREAT knife. You can clip it to D-ring on you pack. It is also useful if you are climbing. There are many outdoor activities, where you access to you pockets or belt is limited (climbing harness, waist belt on a backpack), it makes great sense then. It can also be useful for some boating activities, however rust can be an issue. You can carry the knife where it is readily accessible.

It has a rather "cute" appearance (especially the older version). And as it is carried in a rather open fashion, it helps as such.

It is a pretty standard mid-sized serrated edge Spyderco. It does feel a bit strange at first, since it does not have a pocket clip.

If you are involved in any of the above activities, I highly recommend the knife, and you will find, the price is often very good.

remote release I

I have the older remote release. It's unique. Great idea, but the spring on my version is very weak and just a passing brush against something would open the gate. I have not used it much at all for fear of loosing it. I would recommend having a dummy cord to secure it.
