Surprise guilty plea by former Harvard student in fatal stabbing case

#1

Post by Johnny11758 »

After long maintaining self-defense through the course of two trials, a former Harvard grad student today pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter in the stabbing death of another man.

Definately a surprise, but it almost seems a fittingly strange end to an equally strange and convoluted case.

Thanks for the post. I'm sorry to see this outcome. Kinds of reminds me of the old tv commercial for giving the other guy the right of way, even if you are in the right: "You could be right, dead right."

Fights rarely seem to turn out well, and this one seems to have turned out about as well as can be expected, considering the circumstances, immediate aftermath, and locale. But it's still not a good outcome.

I'm betting he plead guilty to get it over with.... so that he would serve a little over a year in prison and then be out. This has been going since 2004 and he has been in jail 290 days already? Good grief. I would not want to plead guilty but I would want to get it over with.

Either way.........it's a shame.

I didn't read the whole thing, but if I had been in jail that long and they offered me a deal...maybe a guilty plea in exchange for time served, I'd probably go ahead and do it just so I could get out and be with my family again.

Forgive me if I have missed this in previous threads, but what kind, style/brand was used in this act of self-defense?

I hope that anyone reading this who is "just waiting for a chance" to use deadly force will think twice and use every means available to avoid a confrontation FROM THE VERY START including backing down, talking your way out of it, or calling/running for help. Don't put your pride above your skin. We all know that our last resort will be deadly effective and that should give us courage to swallow our pride and diffuse the situation w/o violence if at all possible. He who survives (and remains free) to fight another day wins even if he looks like a coward doing it.
