Another Catcherman question

#1

Post by johns »

Just picked up a catcherman - the seller said it has blade play.
Boy does it ever - was this common with this model?

Mine has no blade play whatsoever. The MBS26 steel blade is tempered to flex like the filet knives you buy at the sporting goods store . Just to be sure that's not what you're referring to right? Joe
"A Mastiff is to a dog what a Lion is to a housecat. He stands alone and all others sink before him. His courage does not exceed temper and generosity, and in attachment he equals the kindest of his race" Cynographia Britannic 1800

No - on mine the blade definately moves side to side. Even seems like the pin will move a little - if I squeeze the end with the blade there is less play.
Do you think Spyderco could do anything with this if I sent it in?
I know I'd have to pay for it to be done, since I'm not the original owner, but I like to have it fixed if its possible.

I'm pretty sure they can. I have no experience with their warranty or repair system OR the Catcherman, but I'm pretty sure they will have a way of fixing or replacing it.

Sounds like a Repair issue (rather than a Warranty issue). Email customer service (Customer Service: customerservice@spyderco.com) or call before sending it. I'm guessing it will be a $20 repair charge plus $5 shipping unless it's the damage is warranty related.

The Catcherman: 2 distinct generations

#9

Post by JD Spydo »

Now do keep in mind that there is a world of difference between the 2 different generations of the Catcherman. The older but sturdier AUS-8 Catchermans had a blade with a thicker spine that I personally liked better for kitchen chores. Also you could get an AUS-8 Catcherman in fully serrated which was never offered as far as I know in the newer/later MBS-26 models.

I've owned at least 4 of both generation models and I've never experienced the blade play you are experiencing.

I personally hated to see the Catcherman dropped and would love to see it come back in a newer/different blade steel. Sorry to hear about your problems. I'm sure it can be remedied however.

Thanks JD Spydo -
This one is the AUS 8 - partially serrated.
I'm going to send it in to see if Spyderco can fix it for me.
Just got back into fishing last year and need a good fillet knife.
I have a Dexter Russel fixed blade which is very good, but a folder is so much more convenient.
I have a lot of Spyderco knives and none of them have blade play like this.
I bought it on the auction site since I wasn't able to find one anywhere else.
It was advertised as unused with blade play - so I'm not feeling like I was deceived or anything. It hasn't any signs of being used, but it is also extremely dull. I think I'll ask the folks at Spyderco to sharpen it as well.
By the way I'm waiting on that SuperHawk :D
