New to the Spyderco Family

Post by jenks »

Just received my first spyderco knife (C11 Delica). I am very pleased with the knife. I have owned many different bands and never really cared about what the blades were made of, but after reading some of the articles in this forum I have some questions.

What is Aus-6? I know it is the blade steel, but how does it hold up to other blades and how well does it keep its edge?

And finally does anybody else own this knife and what do you think of it?

Hi Jenks, welcome to the forum.
The SS Delica was one of the first Spydercos I owned, and I still carry it quite often. Lovely knife.
AUS-6 is a good steel, but at the lower end of the good steel range as far as edge retension goes. The good side is that it sharpens up very easily and takes a razor edge. Did you know cut-throat razors use a fairly soft steel so the edge can be teesed out to a very fine edge ?

Try this link for a run down on most of the high end steels out there,

Welcome to SpydieLand, Jenks!

As Yog explained, AUS-6 is on the lower end of steel grades however, it is easy to sharpen. In my opinion, it is also better than some of the steels that the "other" knifemakers have been pushing.

The Delica was my first Spydie and is also one of my favorites. It's very durable and can handle most everyday tasks. I carried mine for a number of years until I lost it. I've since replaced it with another Delica but my wife has claimed it has hers! Oh well, gives me a good excuse to pick up another one.

Statistically, the Delica and Endura have been Spyderco's bestsellers. I think you've made an excellent choice. Don't be surprised if you find yourself buying another Spyderco soon. They seem to be quite addictive!

Anyway, best wishes.

Hi Kahz!

*sends a wink and a hug to Kahz*

I see you still have the Spydie disease too! Seems quite incurable. Oh, well...Spyderco, Spyderco, Spyderco...

Oh, BTW, I picked up my first Collector's Club knife last night! Niice! More on that later tonight when I can post a pic or two!

Hi Jenks! Welcome to Spyderland!

AUS-6 is an overall good steel, but it does tend to dull a touch fast compared to higher grade steels. You should have no problems with it.

Kahz- I see your case of SpyderFever is still going strong! It's not fatal, unless you forget to buy unessential things like food.

Keepin' it real...real sharp, that is.
