Thee Martial Arts Thread

Post by Lostification »

Hi everyone, I was wonder who here practiced martial arts.

Practiced more than one? Great, list the name of the art and your current belt ranking along with any interesting notes. I know, all the colors are different, some don't use at all, and they have different meanings in each martial arts, thank you.

I'll start this off myself. I have only practiced one martial art EVER and I thoroughly enjoy it. :D I'm considering taking on another, Taekwondo.

Free-Style Self-Defense Karate / Blue Belt

- Based off of the hybrid martial art, Kaju-Kenbo that was developed here in the islands at the Palama settlements. I particularly enjoy take-down and kicking.

RBSD: Target Focused Training, SCARS (primarily), have worked with numerous systems
MMA: Muay Thai Kickboxing, Jujitsu/Submission fighting

No belts, no rankings. I've been training for a few years. I've been shot at, stabbed at, bats/pipes swung at me, have been in fights with multiple armed attackers. I don't think I'm some tough guy and I don't train to compensate for some kind of emotional redardation/ego building. I'm confident in my ability to give everything I have when it counts and I'm not afraid to hurt people when I see the need. Most of my training nowadays is geared towards sports competition.

Training

Well over 20 years training in various Japanese styles, with most of my study concentrated on Aikijujitsu. I had a very traditional Japanese instructor who had multiple black belts and teaching certificates and believed in cross training, so a couple of forms of Karate, some Judo, Kobudo, Kendo, Iaido, etc. was thrown into the mix.

Closing in on my first decade in Albo Kali Silat.

Rank and certifications: black belts--more than one, certificates designating ability to teach a system--more than one.

I currently teach Albo Kali Silat, have been a police instructor and taught officer survival, am certified as a federal law enforcement instructor, have been on a federal SWAT team....hey, wait a minute--why am I writing all this--like Doc said, check out my website: http://www.albokalisilat.org :D

Shorin Ryu - Black Belt (First Degree). This system was also comprised of GoJu Ryu, Pai Lum Kung Fu, and Judo.

Hapkido - no rank.
Jeet Kune Do - no rank.

I've dabbled with various other arts over the years, incorporating moves & concepts that appeal to me into my reportoire.

I'm currently a certified instructor for PA in Defensive Tactics, Pressure Point Control Techniques, Active Countermeasures, CERT Certified, Riot Baton Instructor, Immediate Responder Instructor, Chemical Munitions Instructor, Range Officer, Combat Shooting Instructor, Riot Formations, Use of Restraints Instructor, some hostage negotiations, former sniper, and a whole lot of other certifications that I've forgotten about.

During 17 years working in a state prison, I've been on the sharp end a few times, but have been blessed not to have been injured worse than I have been.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu from Rorion Gracie's school, for a little under 2 years. I know enough to hurt myself pretty badly, but everyone else is safe.

Quit after getting assigned a particular sparring partner one day who was an 18 year old 250 pound newbie who didn't mean it (or didn't know what he meant) when he said "let's just roll, nothing aggressive," got on top of me and pulled my shoulder out of my socket. (I'm well over twice his age and 100 lbs less in weight.) At my age, I was healing too slowly to lead the white-collar life and continue a young man's sport, but I do miss it and am looking for something else I can do where I'm not matching endurance with newbie toughs who could be my grandchildren, and weigh twice my weight. (Never got hurt sparring with anyone who had experience...always the newbies.)

Judo (since I was 16). White belt all the time - and I'm afraid I don't deserve more. :( Nowadays, at 42, I'm starting to make an idea about what judo is. :o
Unfortunately, nowadays there's no more time for the dojo so I have to restrain myself to Tai Chi Chuan... :)

I'm not sure what it's like where you trained but I'd definately urge you to go back and just be careful with who you role with. I've definately been in a nearly identical spot as you (almost exactly 2 years in) and I normally just don't role with the new guys in open role. As I see it there just isn't much point in it. Best case scenario, I don't get hurt by the giant new guy. I'm not going to make a lot of progress in my ground game though by working against a spaz, so I stick mainly to working with people I know and the experienced guys. You can find ways to politely turn people down, especially if as you say, you're old enough to be their grandfather. No reason to deprive yourself due to their potential idiocy.

On original thread topic:
Currently: BJJ with some JKD and MMA for stand-up
Previously: 3rd degree black in Hapkido (McDojo) and 3rd degree black in TKD

Ay dialex: I'm interested in knowing what style of Tai Chi Chuan you play...Chen, Yang, Wu, Sun, Li ? Was also wondering if you learned the combative aspects....Doc :D

Hmmm ...

Those that I dabbled in (which means less than enough time to get serious about them):
Hapkido - low ranking
Jeet Kune Do/Bushido Kempo - no rank
A ground fighting/grappling system that was local to the area - no rank

Those that I spent a longer time in:
Aikido - yudansha (currently studying)
Albo Kali Silat - no ranking (currently studying)
Shinto Muso Ryu Jodo - no ranking

Very cool. A blue belt from Carlos' school is an impressive achievement.

I have trained in Bazilian Jiu Jitsu and Vale Tudo. I've also dabled in Muay Thai. I trained extensively in Tae Kwon Do when I was younger, but it's just tag with pads on....
