hey guys it's been a while sence i posted, paul always says everything i could think of and then some our resident grey panther is on it. but this one made me angry at first read ,as i went further i felt compeled to post. so here goes. well your post is a good one for it gets pepole thinking. at the same time why put that kind of strain on your brain i think that all us knife nuts here get enough practice defending our beloved knives from the pepole who prey on us. we all hear why do you care a knife that is so lame. or oh are you gone cut somebody, or don't carry anything bigger that you want somebody to shove it were the sun don't shine. i use my knives daily for every task from the "porch letter opener" to the 3000$ time keeper. i get as much joy from the beauty of a good knife as i do using sed knife. my knives see a lot of rope ,rip tie, plastic, leather and more bush craft than i care to think of. not to for get i have a family to look after should the need arise i will stand so my loved little ones have a chance to run im not much but with my spydie i at least don't stand alone. :spyder: rocks never walk alone. cause everone who says it will never happen to me is the next one to make the news saying i never though it could happen to me. chance favores the prepaired mind. :cool:

Same here, if a normal ppl carry his knives for SD, he never really want to use them.....

You know, I am quite dissapointed to see what all of us use our knives for. It doesn't seem like many of us actually use our knives for important things. Let me explain.

Envelopes? Whoopie.... It makes me wonder why we pay so much for something that completes such mundane tasks...I mean, who are we kidding when we buy $$$ knives.

I feel that USE is what really determines value.

Everyone's knife hobby is their own personal thing and there are no rules as to how to have a knife hobby...I can buy a Porsche of a knife if I want just to stare at it and examine its construction and beauty till Paradise freezes over if i so choose, and never cut so much as a thread with it, and so what?? the earth won't stop spinning on its axis and the sun will still rise in the east tomorrow! :rolleyes: :D

On another thought, I happen to be a tad obsessed with Spyderco knives in general and Spyderco hawkbills in particular, and for reasons which I'm not going to tell you ...so everyone has their own reasons for getting into this hobby, and for liking SPYDERCO as opposed to being obsessed with nonSpyderco...there doesn't have to be a logical, practical, rhyme-or-reason thing behind it and if there were, how dull the world would be...some things just have intrinsic value, and to me, collecting knives are one of those things, partly!

The point of this is that I am urging all of you to re-evaluate how you use your knives whether they be users or collectibles.

As for your Porsche analogy--If you get a chance to drive one and you like to drive, you will find it a lot more fun taking the back roads in Hawaii rather than H-1. Any moron can crank a good sports car up to speed on a straight (and then crash and burn spectacularly since they don't know what they are doing), but a skilled driver will have more fun on the curves. Taking a driver's car through the correct line on a curve at a far faster pace than most people are comortable with is a good time, as long as it is done responsibly. Of course, my wife tells me I can't play too much when she rides with me in my current daily driver (Subaru WRX)--she theatens to throw up on me :eek: .

i agree with what KaliGman states...Never having driven a Porsche, but having been driven in one many a time, those curves are fuuuuunnnn!! :D :cool: ...there's a reason people buy these cars, just as there's a reason we all buy Spydercos...my observation is that quality costs money, and Spyderco knives are a virtual bargain considering the caliber of the engineering, workmanship, performance, etc., etc. that go into each knife, IMHO.

Hmmm,

Took me a while to discover this thread and a few minutes to consider posting here. Here goes. Sorry if I am repeating anything that has been previously mentioned.

There is no right way or wrong way to use ones Spycerco acquisitions. A Porches of knives they may not be, but taking your Porsche analogy..... I drive a BMW. Why ? Because as KaliGman says, it is more fun to take on the winding backroads here in Oz. Taking a WRX and a BMW to sharp corners and long bends is very enjoyable indeed (especially if you turn off the DSC :p ). I can quite comfortably get by with a small 2 door Toyota, but I choose to get something a bit different just because I can and because it is more fun to experience and to know you can take it that much further (a bit of sideways action does tend to scare you a bit !).

More specifically on knives: Sure we all use them very very lightly and especially on our lovely overengineered Spydies. But the joy is in the using and not really the abusing. Should we all take ourknives to the point where we bend or snap the blades or handles....I wouldn't.

I use mine for light tasks and if push comes to shove I know that with my training and the tools in my pocket I will be prepared for any challenges life may throw at me.

Lostification, I know where you are getting at though with this thread. So I hope that no offense is taken. This sort of civilised conversation/ discussion is actually very good for all us knuts.

I never cut anything with my knives.....(cept for meat) I hate to mess up the blades...just like if I owned a Porche, I'd never drive it...only polish it up and keep it in a garage....I have a Rolex but I don't wear it, don't want to scratch the darn thing....You see once you use something...it then becomes used and no longer pristine....I like pristine!.....I own a copy of Spyderman #1 but I don't read it everyday...So my advice don't use your knives for anything, and if you can't help yourself and must use it...throw it away after it's used caused you already ruined it....or you could always try selling it on e-bay by passing it off as a NIB pristine model after hard use...Doesn't everyone already do that anyway???? :p Doc :D

Argghh! This is funny cuz it's so *true*...this thread should be called KNIFE OCD maybe...because yes, there are some of us who, with certain knives, like maybe if they're not so common, cannot stand to use them even once on anything! :spyder: :spyder: :spyder: :spyder:

I'm in serious knife withdrawal...after buying a ton of knives on ebay and online these last couple of months I've gone Cold VG10 steel Turkey! There's only 1 cure for the Spyderco Blues: get more Spyders soon!! :cool:

First off,i would much rather use a pricey Spydie to open a letter,than a letteropener,cause i dont have a letteropener and i dont like letteropeners.
Why does this only bother you now,what you use your knives for?
Its all about style my friend and a cheap knife,i dont trust period.
A letteropener,i dont even look at.Spydies i can look at all day,because its art.
what do you use an expensive pieces of art for.,decoration i guess and what else?
Spydies are artpieces and have lots of use atleast,in my opinion.
i will hardly ever use a scissor or any other cutter to cut something,if i know a Spydie can do it with one slice or chop.

I enjoyed reading your post. Allow me to offer some views...

Speaking of cars, I drive an old Mitsubishi Montero,
I turned down a Lotus & a Hummer. I've kept this beauty (Vladeria) for a long time & gotten to know her very well, we have been through a lot.

I for one, like to do the same with a knife.
The Delica I have is over a decade year old. The tip is chipped.
All the simple tasks I've done with her, & the abusive things I've done such as opening a tin can, prying off a bottle cap, cutting a soda-can just to see how well & how far she goes. Also, I train with her. To this day, I bring home card board boxes to practice slashes, stabs, & also gotten a wooden board.

I do the same with cheap $2 knives, they start to fall apart.
The Delica STILL works GREAT!

either way the psychological comfort I get from a knife combined with my daily training is where I find the true value.

I have some expensive knives for novelty/collectors sake and those sit in the closet & if I lost those, I won't miss them.

Look, we all really have a passion for knives,whether collecting or using.
If opening letters is all a knifeknut wants to do with his xpensive Spydie,so be it,its what makes YOU HAPPY.
i attach way more value to the pricey Spydie,than to the money i payed for it.
****,what if i had to pay a hefty speeding or traffic fine,equivalent to the the price of a Spydie.
I would have had nothing to show for the fine,but a stoopid receipt,and the money's GONE.
so what i'm saying is,that the cash will burn a whole in your pocket eventually,but the Spydies will always be there, for whatever you will need or use them for.
the money stays the same,and loses value eventually,but the Spydie becomes lesser available,increases in value and the Spydie doesn't stay the same,but always evolve and new ones become available,for purchase,which is real nice to me.
You got to move with the times we are in now,or stay behind.

I use my Spydies for opening packages containing other Spydies. Thats serious business and I would never insult the contents of those packages by useing cheap knives to open them. Its an expensive and unending cycle. :confused:

:spyder: Never justify a collection through need or use, that gives an unbeatable trump card to a misunderstanding spouse. Inherent joy and pleasure in collecting is the only legitimate reason to keep spending money when we all know spydies are so good we only really need two to get it all done. AMEN to that Mr. Cook. I am a died in the wool knife addict. I love to hold them, look at them, flip them around in my hands and use them for anything and everything I can think of. When people ask me why I carry one, I challenge them to carry one for a week (even offer one of mine :) ) and then they will see. Like most here, I carry my :spyder: 's for the sheer comfort and peace of mind of having the most versatile tool ever created at hand for anything life throws at me be it loose threads, zip ties, box tape, cutting tags off my daughter's new toys or clothes or defending myself, my family or anyone else who may need it. I also find great beauty in these tools and like them for what they are as well as what they do.

The fact is that living in modern society almost erased any need for carrying a knife with you. I know that many times (actually in vast majority of cases) I used my EDC it wasn't because of real need - I could easily go by without a knife - but simply because I had a knife with me.

Spending money on "expensive" knife is not rational - and situation when it's only use is cutting your snack or opening envelopes just reflects that.
But why we still do that? It's the same reason why women visit fashion stores and boutiques - satisfying your pleasure, not need.

Dude if i wanted to go and buy a nice, expensive sports car, i would be satisfying a pleasure.If i needed to go buy food at the grocery store with my expensive car,i would be satisfying a need.

Personally.. I feel like myself, opening a package, that just happens to contain a new Spyderco, is far more manly, and a better use for the knife, than any other task the knife could be used for. :D
