I've Contracted Hawkbillism

Post by SimpleIsGood229 »

Howdy y'all,

I got my Tasman Salt in the mail! Now I see what this whole hawkbill thing is all about! Almost everybody I show it to thinks it's ugly, but of course, THEY haven't cut anything with a hawkbill before!

Who else LOVES hawkbills and wonders why more companies don't make them?
God Bless Texas!

I've loved hawkbills from the start - my first spyderco was a civilian, and that did get used for some utility work when I was younger and dumber....but ever since then, I've wanted to get another. I got my tasman salt SE a couple months ago, and I've been EDCing it.

I agree, I have had a few people tell me my hawkbills are ugly, but I am hooked. I also own a Dodo and a Harpy now.

As for other companies - a few others do, though I have never tried them. I'll stick with my ever-growing collection of spydercos....

enjoy your new knife :)

SE or PE? How do you like it?

Who else makes hawkbills? I've only heard of one other company (which I've conveniently forgotten), and haven't even seen their hawkbills.
enjoy your new knife :)
Yeah, thanks! I already am!

Actually, there are quite a few companies that do...but not nearly as well as our beloved Spyderco!!! :D

Hawkbills Spoken here

#7

Post by JD Spydo »

I've heard some say that Hawkbills are very limited in their use. After using them almost daily for close to 3 solid years I have to conclude that these people aren't using one or else they would know better.

But then again people tend to denigrate that which they don't understand.

Hawkbills are a blessing indeed. True that they are limited in scope. However all cutlery has limitations according to the blade geometry that particular blade has. That's why I carry 3 different Spyders each day.

My G-10 Harpy is truly one of the 3 that I personally find essential in my daily cutting chores. All my Hawkbill Users are tools I can and do depend on. Once you get in the groove and realize the potential for EDC use and SD use from these great blades you will certainly be sold as I am.

It's amazing to me how many Hawkbill converts we've had here in Spyderville in the last year especially. Congratulations are in order my friend and I hope you end up getting all of Spyderco's Hawkbills.

Count me in with the hawkbill users. My SE dodo is quite possibly my favorite blade out of my whole group (but the salsa comes very closely in second :D ) And man, I wish I didn't lose my cricket :o

There are many that don't understand why a hawkbill would even be useful, and I guess I agree that it is a fairly specialized design and works best when paired with a more conventional blade, but when they work good, they work great :D

As for other companies producing hawks, why? :D They wouldn't be anywhere near the quality unless it's thrice the price :D

I've found 2 other kitchen chores that the Hawkbill blade does well with. I found my G-10 Harpy to be good at "coring" apples in preparation for making baked apples.

I've also found the Harpy to be good at removing the rind on some slab bacon once.

The Hawkbill has many uses and a lot of them we haven't discovered yet. It would be good to add one to any set of kitchen cutlery.
