What do you need that big of a knife for?

The general population is just going to have to learn to handle such things, especially if they plan to spend any time in the South...
I'm hoping that this kind of thing is cyclic in nature, and that the current "Age of the Helpless Victim" is on its way out in the not-so-distant future.
I'm seeing far too many "men" out there who are so helpless and timid that I literally throw up in the back of my mouth a little.

When I see other folks sawing and hacking away at their food with a butter knife, or dull house blade, I get a great deal of satisfaction making a single surgical slice through a piece of meat effortlessly. I usually pull the Spyderco out without making any fuss and set it next to the rest of the utensils until the meal arrives. My old stainless Endura tended to draw less attention than the Military as it blended with the tableware. This has been my practice with folders since the mid 80's here in California.Stevie Ray wrote:I would be reluctant to pull out a Military (or any folder) for that matter at a restaurant. Since it's likely that nobody else in the house is pulling a pocket knife out to cut what they've been served, it may well attract the wrong kind of attention since the rest of the patrons are managing to get by with the utensils they've been given.

I went through the drive-thru at Hardee's this morning to get the family some biscuits. I had a coupon and was using my ZDP Jess Horn to cut it out while I was waiting. I pulled up and finished cutting and the lady said, "Boy, you look dangerous!" then smiled and laughed. Ahhh, I love the South.
On the other hand, I am constantly having to cut things for people who should at least be carrying a stockman type knife.

Last time I used my E4 in a resturant on the food the waitress just looked and smiled. It is not uncommon for me it use it on the kids straws, as they are usually too long and end up tipping over and spilling mid-drink. I haven't had a comment or even a look yet.

I agree with Michael on this one. I try to be aware of how I use my knife in an area where there may be more of a concern from other people. The fact is, people are consistently conditioned by the media to think from a fear based position. And since I know that, I can't really get mad when people do what they've been conditioned to do. It doesn't stop me completely from using my knife in public, but I'm careful about it and I'm not surprised when others may get nervous just at the sight of it.Michael Cook wrote: :spyder: I try not to shove my views down NKP's throats, bed-wetting liberals though they be. Right on...and you know what they say...people's attitudes are the slowest thing to change...I must admit that when I read about a crime in the paper and the perp was found to be carrying a knife or gun, my knee-jerk reaction is still that he was carrying the weapon only because he meant to hurt someone...and I'm proknife, progun, yet conditioning dies hard... :DIgnoramus wrote:I try to be aware of how I use my knife in an area where there may be more of a concern from other people. ...or such a tough steak that you have to cut it with any knife :D ?yablanowitz wrote:Always answer a question with a question. If the waiter asks you why you carry such a large knife, ask him why he provides such a dull knife that you have to use it![]()

Why didn't this ever occur to me? I always have a knife with me and the straws are always too long.Simple Man wrote:Last time I used my E4 in a resturant on the food the waitress just looked and smiled. Sorry, I guess I kind of mis-stated that. I've gotten a couple comments on the size of my E4 from people I know. They hold it and think it's big.ASHTXSNIPER wrote:I live in South Central Texas and I never get comment about how big my Military or Endura folders are. :D
MAN, I want to get a Manix C95!

:spyder: :spyder:  :spyder: :spyder: I allways try to stay small when eating at a restarant....Say the Captain, or Para Milli, or D'allara, even one of my many Endura4s'; Funny thing is, no matter what my choice, I allways get strange, sycotic looks from everyone.....Hmmm? That is a good point
P.S....Is that how you spell sycotic...If not, please correct me...I'm not sure.
