How to use the DUCKFOOT sharpener.

#1

Post by Jurphaas »

Hi all - Because of the questions put forward in the Amsterdam show report post, let me explain how to use the new byrd DUCKFOOT sharpener works here too, as I believe it will be of interest of many.

First, I don't know how or why Sal came up with the name..... Do you have suggestions....???? Just joking.

The DUCKFOOT sharpenener (DFS) has a diamond coating all over. I skip the manufacturing process except for the part that the diamond grid is electrostaticly attached to the steel frame.
A diamond coating makes for a very aggressive abrasive surface, so be carefull and DON'T aply much pressure when sharpening on the DFS. If you do, you will only tear out much of the diamonds from the steel frame and steel on steel won't sharpen much!

The leather travel/protection pouch that comes with the DFS, provides a non slip surface to rest the DFS on while sharpening. Always use this split leather pouch while sharpening.

When you rest either one of the two large arcs at the bottom of the DFS on the non slip surface, you will notice a 20 degree angle on the outside corner from top to bottom.
Now, when you tip the DFS from one arc over to the other just by moving the DFS over from left to right or visa verca using your finger on top, you create this 20 degree angle on both sides.( a rocking motion from one side to the other)

Now, with this pre-set 20 degree sharpening angle, it is easy to sharpen your knife in the same fashion as you would on the Tri-Angle sharpener, which I consider to be the more stationary sharpening system.

On the two outside sharpening surfaces you will notice a wide curved sharpening surface and a sharp corner surface. You will use the wide arc surface for straight edges and the sharp corners for your serrated edges.

Many more features are incorporated in this very clever designed DFS. A DVD with Sal demonstrating all of these features will come with the DFS when it is ready for relese in a few months time.

So far, I believe this sharpener, of which the original design dates back to the 1980's...(!!), to be the best sharpening tool since sliced bread!

Please watch the release of the DFS and get one, they will provide good service and are great fun to work (play) with.

Thank you all for taking notice of this new byrd product.

WARNING: This thread is from February of this year, and I am bringing it back.

Since Sal said the following in another thread I wondered if anyone else has bought or used the Duckfoot sharpener?

"FYI, The Profile was the predecessor tothe Duck foot.

Here is the post that Sal wrote that in:

Thanks all! :)

I have one that came without instructions or videos. I see now that they are advertised with videos, and would love to borrow one.

I have not used my duckfoot at all.
