Spyderco black blades = more corrosion resistance?

#1

Post by jmateer »

I'm thinking about getting a Paramilitary with my first paycheck as a EMT (woot!). I just have 1 question before I get the knife. Does the black coating on the Paramilitary's blade offer any advantages with corrosion resistance over the plain (satin?) blade?

Depends on the coating. If it's just some sort of oxide finish, it won't protect against rust. If the coating seals the pores of the steel, or permeates them, then yes, it would protect against rust....at least until the finish was scratched.

Yes, any coating will help reduce surface rust for a time on the lock and blade. A lot of people like to hate on black coatings because that is the "in" thing to do, but they fail to see the added benefits of corrosion resistance. I work around water a lot and my Black Native has held up much better than the satin model as far as corrosion is concerned.

Hmm, well I don't have much experience with Spydercos' black coatings. I wonder what they use?

IIRC, Spyderco gets their blade coated with DLC(Diamond Like Coating) by some company. I'll try to find the post where I remember this from.

It can help the corrosion resistance of the blade if the coating is done well, but remember the edge itself is still bare, and will need some maintenance.

The DLC coating on my black Native greatly increases cutting friction. This is a small but possiblly critical concern. I have been teased by coworkers when my DLC Native failed to preform to my usual fearsom knife standards.

I am not a fan of polished blades but a DLC coated blade is the worst of the worst of all finishes.

I would buy and own any DLC knife Spyderco makes but I do not want to carry them. DLC blades for safe queens not users.
Not really all that slick ;)
