I'll throw my contribution in here...

Here's a knife with some history. I found it near a bunch of stone and gravel piles during a hike in the forest near my apartment. It was mostly buried in the dirt and caked over with mud, so I'm not even sure how I spotted it; it must have been lost for months when I found it.

I took it home and cleaned it up with water and gave it a good long soak in some WD-40. The plain part of the edge was pretty dull, the serrated part was chipped and chewed up, and the FRN handle was permanently grungified from sitting in dirt forever, but otherwise the knife was in good shape.. no obvious rust spots or cracks anywhere.

Since then I've spent a few hours total with a diamond file grinding off the broken teeth and thinning the hollow grind down to more of a saber-ish flat grind. It's also my sharpening practice knife and the reason why I can put a shaving edge on my kitchen knives. I guess technically it's not my "beater", because I'll use my Leatherman if I'm planning on doing something stupid with a knife, but usually it's the one I'd rather reach for.

I snagged the clip on my Pacific Salt on day and ripped it out. I used a butane lighter to melt the FRN back around the clup to secire it. It's now rock solid and the knife performs fine. Not sure about the warranty though. This knife is my 'loaner' for my knifeless mates on bushwalks.

Yeah the tip could do with some regrinding/beveling
And some better crisp edge on it . Would take me about 45 minutes.
The total blade repolishing ... i think 4 hours. That is without power tools...

This crusty old Mariner has served a good 15 plus years of service in our country's defense. It has been in the 416 Flight Test Squadron at the Air Force Flight Test Center for almost all of its life. I've served alongside this old airman for the last eighteen months and have yet to hear him complain. I been caring for him and backing him up with the stalwart G10 Rookie - another old soldier and veteran of the Texas semiconductor wars - since he's been having trouble making the cut with the younger troops and lost the (lock) spring in his step. He doesn't have the same snap when he's called to attention for incoming supply shipments but F16s around the world have him to thank for servicing the supply pipeline that led to successful testing of the upgrades and modifications they've had over the years. He was retired last week with full honors and Java intends to have him in an Old Mariners Rehabilitation program so he can serve his remaining days as a rehandled custom.

Great Story Java.

I think it still looks pretty good after so long time of service.
Or did you tinker it a little before you took the pictures. ;)
Nice to hear people still using them knives hard instead of leaving them to getter dust in a drawer

take care

I don't know how to do picture but the Knife I carry Most and the one that gets used every day is the Pro Grip. I love this little knife. I sometimes carry the Native s30v model. I have worn out a couple Endura's over the years.

LOL!

I was thinking more along the lines of stabilized petrified platypus patellas with inlaid otter otoliths dyed blue in the shape of the Spyderco logo. :D

Scrimmed whalebone or ivory would be ideal and in keeping with its seafaring heritage but the dino toe has me intrigued now........

MAT888
I tinkered not. I'd have like to have said he was long in the tooth but you can see the front serrations are worn after a lifetime of slashing Air Force packaging, handling, shipping, and transportation devices.... He's also been on a couple of rough deployments where he got drunk and picked up them badly etched Falcon Supply tatoos. :D

java,

What's up with the cable lanyard? Is that just for pictures or what is it's purpose? I mean that's a pretty good size cable.

That's an AF maintenance support section thing. They put cable lanyards and Remove Before Flight streamers on anything that can make it onto the flightline. Thankfully, judjing from the remaining Spyderteeth - the Mariner never tried to chew itself free........ :D

Why do the Salt 1 say ''H1'' on my (yellowSE) blade but on the pictured one in the catalog thing on this site it says Salt 1?

I'mma gonna try googling it and see
Dem tings be mine:
PE blue Yojimbo ~ PE blue Dodo ~ ZDP PE Delica ~ s30v Native ~ Military ~ Aus Dragonfly ~ Endura4 ~ Yellow Salt 1 ~ Yellow Pacific Salt ~ 3 byrds and a lot of Cold Steel, Benchmade, Glock, Mora, KA-BAR, Kanetsune, SOG, CRKT, Schrade and misc. crap.

The older generation Salt knives said their model name on the blade, whereas the newer generation ones say "H1" in that stylized font.

I'm not really sure why the catalog has a picture of a Salt1 in the older styling, without the "H1".

Wow... it used to be serrated?? That's amazing... I would think a lot more metal would need to be removed than that. Did you remove the serrations, or was it that way when you bought it?
