Big hands + SD knife (folder)

#1

Post by JaM »

Because I didnt want to hijack Raven's thread:

if you had fairly large hands, and wanted a folder as SD-backup, what would you choose ? Millie, paramillie ? The Lil'Temperance fits my hands quite nice, but it's an "unreplacable" knife.
The Yojimbo is too "shallow" for me, I dont like it. I even find the Dodo a bit "cramped" (just for example).

Here are my mitts:

This is an Endura (just so you know). I am afraid even that one might "slip" if I ever used it for stabbing.

I do know I need training with said knife, but hat I want to know from the people here is what kind of Spyderco they would advise me. I've not been able to handle either a mili or para also. And IF I would get something like that (a dedicated SD knife for almost 200 €), I'd better be sure it fits before I buy it.

Is this a hopeless case, or is there some spyder I've forgotten ? Please help !

Best regards,

JaM

There are many for the large handed person....Chinook, Manix, The Big Caly, Ayoob and even the Kris come to mind right off the bat...I'm sure I'm missing a few others...big handed people (I have small hands) will prob chime in.....Doc :D

Looks like your hands are about my size. I find the Manix and Chinook are
the two most comfortable for our size hands but they are heavier and therefore harder to conceal. Especially in dress trousers.
I have never had a problem with using the Endura or G-10 Police for SD though.

I've treid the Native, I found the spave between the first choil and he rest of the handle too "sparse". So it doesnt fit me well, it feels.

As for the Chinook and the Manix: They look too bulky for me, havent tried one sonce the local dealer(s) dont have them in stock.

Big6: have you ever tried a Mili or Para ? How did they feel ? Because they look "flatter" and thus easier to carry to me. I am not sure about the bulkieness of the Manix (or chinook), although they do look knife ehm... nice to me.

Thanks for the replies so far !

The Military will fit your hands very nice. It's handle is very long.

I know the best solution though. If you want, PM me your adres and I will send my Mili. Than you can decide for yourself.

:spyder: I believe knife choice is less important than consistant training but the manix, chinook, and civilian will fit your hands fine. :spyder:

Very true... I intend to do more "knife work" though, in my Jiu jitsu. I'll try and hope some of the other students want to learn that too, but I have good hopes. :)

I know how you feel. I compromise a lot with knife selection, but I lean toward larger folders on average. I am a fairly large guy with large mittens. The above knives will do you well. I understand the thinness of the Yojimbo, but it works so well! :D

I just read the measurements on the military. WOW! I didn't know it was so long, haha! I'll have to go into the shop to see for myself!

The Military is a fine knife, but that exposed linerlock caused an accidental closing for me once and I was just puncturing cardboard boxes to break them down (tight hammer grip). A lot of tactical folders used to have linerlocks a few years ago, and they pretty much all got upgraded to either different locks or had their liners hidden 'flush' with the scales. I didn't sustain any cuts thanx to the choil, but it did teach me a lesson. On all serious working folders I don't want any of my digits on/over the lock release. I also don't think the Military offers that much more protection against sliding your hand onto the blade, over the Endura 4.

I'd suggest the Kris; it's a good knife and more pocket friendly when compared to the Chinook (my would-be first choice) and Manix. It's not lightweight, but the smooth surfaces make it comfy to carry. Maybe an ATR could work for you. It's SS but with the holes and Cobra hood it should be secure enough. I know my Ti version is.

By perception, I feel the Chinook is the easiest to carry of the large Spydies. The weight is distributed well and the curvy closed knife makes for comfy IWB carry. The G10 surface is rough in the beginning though.

Manix and Chinook are the best for SD, IMHO. Protection against sliding up on the blade, solid lock up. Military has a great blade, but the lock is way too exposed and there's no guard at all. They are relatively large and heavy folders, but I've had no problem with pocketing the Chinook comfortably (the Manix is on the way via UPS). The few ounces that the heavy duty folders add don't matter much unless you're wearing thin dress slacks.

I had a manix for a while and ultimately decided that the blade was too wide and the knife too heavy for edc. It had the best ergonomics out of any knife I have handled though.

I have a military on the way and hope it will be what I wanted the manix to be.

Gunting, Chinook? If those are not big enough, Strider makes the GB and AR, though the big choil makes those more tool than weapon. I carry an AR almost daily.
